The band is well known for their relatively frequent lineup changes, which, most notably, involves a fluctuating lineup of vocalists, both on tour and on record. Dance Gavin Dance incorporates many different musical genres into their palette, such as math rock, funk, and soul on top of its post-hardcore sound. Ex-vocalist Jonny Craig also received high marks for contributing to the band's unorthodox soul sound and guitarist Will Swan has been recognized for his intricate, fast-moving guitar licks and riffs.
The band currently consists of vocalists Jon Mess and Tilian Pearson, guitarists Will Swan and Andrew Wells and drummer Matthew Mingus.
To date, the band has released ten studio albums, two live albums and one EP. Their most recent album, entitled Jackpot Juicer was released in 2022.

Dance Gavin Dance Lyrics

(Something's wrong, something's wrong)
There's a bomb in my face
Decorated in white lace
(Something's wrong, something's wrong)
When people they look at you
Do you think
Do you think of food?
Stretch yourself
(Carving out some lungs with a stake)
as far as this can go at night
(Brontosaurus tracks, relax)
(Carving out some lungs with a stake)
Follow when I row
(Brontosaurus tracks, relax)
Hey, is that your lady?
[Chorus]
She gave it willingly
Hey wait, I've got the parts (To fix your head)
(To fix your head, to fix)
She gave it willingly
(Hey wait, I've got the parts) To fix your head
Fix your head
Fix your head
Wait right here
I'm going to explode
wait right here
I'm exploding
I've got to be in your car
I'm still shooting even par
Stretch yourself
(Carving out some lungs with a stake)
as far as this can go at night
(Brontosaurus tracks, relax)
(Carving out some lungs with a stake)
Follow when I row
(Brontosaurus tracks, relax)
Hey, is that your lady?
[Chorus]
[Repeat: x2]
(Something's wrong, something's wrong)
There's a bomb in my face
Decorated in white lace
(Something's wrong, something's wrong)
When people they look at you
Do you think
Do you think of food?
The lyrics of Dance Gavin Dance's song "Antlion" are surreal and strange, making it difficult to pin down one specific interpretation. The opening lines "Something's wrong, something's wrong / There's a bomb in my face / Decorated in white lace" suggest a feeling of tension or unease, possibly related to a personal struggle or conflict. The juxtaposition of the violent imagery of a bomb with the delicate decoration of white lace creates a sense of cognitive dissonance, emphasizing the turmoil the singer is experiencing.
The chorus, "She gave it willingly / Hey wait, I've got the parts (To fix your head) / She gave it willingly / (Hey wait, I've got the parts) To fix your head / Fix your head / Fix your head," adds to the bizarre nature of the song's lyrics. It could potentially be interpreted as a plea for help or a commentary on the desire to fix oneself or someone else. The line "Stretch yourself as far as this can go at night / Brontosaurus tracks, relax" could be interpreted as advice to push oneself to the limits and take time to relax and rejuvenate, an interesting contrast to the explosive and chaotic nature of the rest of the song.
Some of the lines in the song may not have a cohesive meaning but instead work to create a specific mood or atmosphere. The lyrics seem to be full of random thoughts and images, making it more difficult to craft one specific narrative. Ultimately, the song's surrealist lyrics and chaotic sound deliver an emotional experience that will be different for each listener.
