Missing
Dancing On Tables Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Looking back at you
I remember what we used to do
And I would never see your point of view
Even if I really needed to
And it′s hard and I miss when you speak to me
And the words that you sing echo in my ears
Now my phone never rings and I need you to say
Why won't you come over
Oh, how am I going to get through this
Oh, do anything for someone you miss
Looking at it now
If only we had compromised somehow
And the way we used to scream and shout
What the hell was that thing all about?
And it′s hard and I miss when you speak to me
And the words that you sing echo in my ears
Now my phone never rings and I need you to say
Why won't you come over
Oh, how am I going to get through this
Oh, do anything for someone you miss
Oh, how am I going to get through this
Oh, do anything for someone you miss
And it's hard for you
And it′s hard for me
And we think too much
It should be so easy
And it′s hard for you
And it's hard for me
And we think too much
It should be so easy
Oh, how am I going to get through this
Oh, do anything for someone you miss

Oh, how am I going to get through this
Oh, do anything for someone you miss

Overall Meaning

In the song Missing by Dancing On Tables, the singer is reflecting on a past relationship and the feelings of longing that come with it. The singer is looking back at the relationship and seems to regret not being more understanding of their partner’s perspective. They sing about missing the way their partner used to talk to them and how the words they would sing echo in their ears. The singer’s phone never rings anymore and they feel an overwhelming need for their partner to come back into their life. They struggle with how to get through the pain of missing someone that they care about so deeply.

The chorus repeats the idea of doing anything for someone you miss and how difficult it is to get through the pain of missing someone. The two people in the relationship seem to have had trouble communicating with each other, as evidenced by the way they would scream and shout instead of compromising. The singer can’t help but wonder what that was all about and expresses a sense of confusion and regret for how things turned out.

The bridge of the song is particularly powerful as it suggests that the relationship was not easy for either person involved. Despite the struggles, the singer still wishes that things could be easier and that they could find a way to reconnect. Overall, the song is about the pain of missing someone and the regret that comes with not being able to make a relationship work.
