Speak 'n' Spell
Dane Cook Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I couldn't spell when I was a little kid, I couldn't spell.
So my parents were all concerned so they went down to the uh toy store.
They bought me a little red box called Speak... n' spell.
You remember that? Speak n' spell?
They shouldn't have called it speak and spell.
What they should've called it was Speak... Like the Devil!
Remember the voice A-E-I-O-U. What was that? A-B-C-D-
*punch, scream* That thing was evil. L-M-N-.
That thing would wake me in the middle of the night like 2 in the morning...
Play with me! Get up, I wanna spell right now! I'm 8 years old.

I spell great. I talk like a freak.
I'm like...Mom, something is wrong! Something is W-R-O-N-G, wrong.

Overall Meaning

In Dane Cook's song "Speak 'n' Spell," he reminisces about his childhood struggles with spelling and how his parents bought him a Speak 'n' Spell toy to help him improve. However, he quickly realizes that the toy has a sinister side to it, with its robotic, demonic voice that would wake him up in the middle of the night, demanding that he play with it and spell out words. The toy would often scream at him, causing Dane to joke that it should have been named "Speak... Like the Devil!"

The lyrics are a humorous take on the childhood experience of learning how to spell, and how the Speak 'n' Spell toy played a role in that. Dane Cook exaggerates the negativity of the toy, making it out to be a demonic entity that terrorized him at night. However, the underlying message of the song is that childhood experiences, even negative ones, can be a source of humor and entertainment later in life.

Overall, "Speak 'n' Spell" is a playful and witty take on a common childhood experience that many people can relate to, and is a testament to Dane Cook's comedic style and ability to turn everyday experiences into laughs.

Speak and spell scared the crap out of me when I came across it at the toy store. I learned how to spell quickly so I wouldn't have to have it.

do you think speak and spell sounds whack? You haven't lived until you've heard of Braelin speak. For those who don't know, a braille and speak was a pocket PC for blind people before they were even thought of for the sighted community.
