Woman
Dane Donohue Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You don't have to explain it to me
Babe, I feel it coming...just have to let it be
I've seen your cold, cold ways
And it kept me lost in a haze

Gonna lose your woman
Gonna lose your woman
Gonna lose your woman
You're just hard to hold onto...
These days

What if you fell in love
And got knocked from your shoes
You'd be the first to come running,
Crying the blues
I had some crazy notion
I could keep it all in motion

Gonna lose your woman
Gonna lose your woman
Gonna lose your woman
You're just hard to hold onto...
These days...don't you know

Surely you'd think by now
I've got enough on my mind
You ain't got another thing to do,
Baby, but pull me through...

Whoa, you always run away,
You're like a river, like a stream
Leaving lovely lies and shattered skies
And broken dreams...

Gonna lose your woman
Gonna lose your woman
Gonna lose your woman
You're just hard to hold onto...
These days...don't you know

What do you think, do you think
All this crying's gonna help?
Well, I must be crazy
And I'd be talking to myself...
I'm gonna quit this crazy city
Before I drown myself in pity

Gonna lose your woman
Gonna lose your woman
Gonna lose your woman
You're just hard to hold onto...
These days

So hard to hang onto, I know...

So hard to hang onto, I know...
So hard to hang onto...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Dane Donohue's "Woman" express the singer's frustration and resignation over his relationship with a woman who he feels is slipping away from him. In the first verse, the singer acknowledges that he senses the end is near but can't stop it from happening because the woman's aloof and uninterested attitude has kept him in a state of confusion. The chorus, with its repeated refrain of "Gonna lose your woman," underscores this feeling of inevitability and the difficulty of holding onto something that is slipping away.

In the second verse, the singer reflects on his own vulnerability in the midst of this situation. He imagines what it would be like if he were the one falling in love and being rejected, and realizes that he's been holding onto a "crazy notion" that he can control the situation and keep the relationship going. The third verse emphasizes the woman's tendency to run away and leave behind broken promises and shattered dreams, and the singer laments that all his crying won't change anything. In the final verse, he resolves to leave the city and move on from the relationship, recognizing that he can't hold onto something that doesn't want to be held onto.

Overall, the lyrics of "Woman" capture the frustration and sense of futility that can come with trying to hold onto a relationship that just isn't working. The use of repetition and imagery throughout the song underscores the singer's feelings of helplessness and sadness, while also highlighting the universality of these emotions when it comes to matters of the heart.

I was lucky enough to grow up around Dane's music. I got to hear him live at least 300 times playing in trios, duos, solo, and with a stage full of musicians (Old Friends Concert). I'm a musician, and Dane had a huge impact on me wanting to be a musician. He has one of the most pleasant singing voices I've heard, and as many times as I've heard him live, his voice was always pitch perfect.
I was just a teenage kid when I first met Dane, but through the years running into him, he was always very kind to me and was always available to "talk music" with me.

Very talented musician, singer, and songwriter and I appreciate all of his music through the years. I'll always remember sitting front row at Snow Trails watching his band "The Buckles" perform. Such great musical memories, with a very fond impact on my life.

Thank You Dane.
