Two Against One
Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Make no mistake I don't do anything for free
I keep my enemies closer than my mirror ever gets to me
And if you think that there is shelter in this attitude
Wait til you feel the warmth of my gratitude

I get the feeling that it's two against one
I'm already fighting me, so what's another one
The mirror is a trigger and your mouth's a gun
Lucky for me, I'm not the only one

And if it looks to me like you in your reflection
Plan to add your own fight to this dimension
Then tell it this ain't no free-for-all to see
There's only three, it's just you and me against me

I get the feeling that it's two against one
I'm already fighting me, so what's another one
The mirror is a trigger and your mouth's a gun
Lucky for me I'm not the only one
Lucky for me I'm not the only one

And if your foot's on to sick a thousand "yes men"
Plan to break into the middle of this little plan
Then there's your plan to hear me say
That I won't play around the way
Anyway, I plan to plan around them

I get the feeling that it's two against one
I'm already fighting me, so what's another one
The mirror is a trigger and your mouth's a gun

Lucky for me I'm not the only one
Lucky for me I'm not the only one

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Two Against One by Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi explore the idea of self-sabotage and inner turmoil. The singer acknowledges that they don't do anything for free and keep their enemies closer than their own reflection. The use of the mirror as a metaphor emphasizes that the greatest fight is often against oneself. However, the singer also recognizes that there may be someone else adding to their struggle. The line "I get the feeling that it's two against one" suggests that there may be a partner or an outside force that is exacerbating the singer's inner conflict. Despite this, the singer remains resolute in their determination to overcome their struggles, stating "lucky for me, I'm not the only one".

It's interesting because if you just watch the video, it's almost like a ghost story, where the deer is getting revenge on the man who killed him by killing his whole family. But if you watch the video and listen to the song at the same time, it tells a completely different story, where the deer is symbolic of guilt and the man is feeling guilty for letting his family die. And he tries to kill the deer (that which he's blaming for their deaths) and it's really himself he kills in the end.

"The mirror is a trigger and your mouth's a gun"
"It's just you and me against me"
"I keep my enemies closer than my mirror ever gets to me"

It's something I can relate to...and really, probably pretty much anyone, since we've all experienced guilt, regret, and shame at some point in our lives.

But the video tells two totally different stories depending on how you watch it.

@@FloridaManSam Schizophrenic / personality disorders long term leading to PTSD on top of the rest of the shit show, perhaps a TI (Targeted Individual) who is being tortured and harassed in broad daylight by tight knit criminals / spies / politicians / terrorists until stress, ostracization & severe lack of meaningful human contact begin to take a costly toll on our protagonist. Likely he'd have no way to stop the harassment or protect himself. He can't run away IRL so the only escape is to dive straight into the twisted, hellishly deteriorating, fractured psyche of which little is left to fill what remains of the boney, neglected vessel the man's mind eventually spilled from. The video shows the main character as perhaps a bit unkempt & unhinged, intensely focused on hunting and killing the phantom-esque trophy buck. After quite the insane ordeal has ensued he draws blood only for the illusion to break & reveal he had been hunting himself the whole time... and the hunt was a success. The question remains as to whether the ending is happy or sad... peace is peace, they'll tell you. Death is death as well. Hug a dog, my friends & fellow weary travelers. Hug a dog or a loved one & seek peace if this content hits too close to home. Somebody cares; make sure you're able to return that sentiment from a warm place no matter how crazy you get because once you lose the warmth, nobody will suffer the initial chilly embrace long enough to bring you back from such a desolate, frosty solo oblivion.
