Very engaged in the civil society, he sang and personified the lust for life, the hopes and the doubts of his generation, often clashing with politicians, elites, and older generations. He is especially famous for a tense debate about the struggles, hopes and doubts of French youth with the then first secretary of the French Socialist party, François Mitterrand, who was later twice elected president of France. Later he also had problems in a misunderstood verbal clash about French veterans.
Daniel Balavoine loved Africa and this transpires in many of his songs. He dedicated himself to humanitarian projects and took part in the Paris-Dakar rallye two times. The third time he took part only for humanitarian reasons. On the 14th january 1986, around 8pm, his helicopter crashed between Mali and Burkina-Faso, killing all five passengers, putting an end to his career, and leaving behind his pregnant wife Corine and his son Jeremy.

Autour d’un corps s’endormant
Douceur immense
Pour le départ d’un parent
Calmement
The lyrics of "Partir Avant Les Miens" by Daniel Balavoine delve into the idea of death, mourning, and leaving loved ones behind. The opening lines describe a small crowd that dances around a person who is about to pass away, creating a sense of peacefulness and calmness. The second verse, painted with the colors of celebration, narrates the moment of passing as the faces of the loved ones smile and whisper to each other, celebrating the end of the old life and the start of a new one. The chorus, "Et j’ai souvent souhaité/De partir avant les miens" translates to "And I have often wished/To leave before my own" and summarizes the main ideas of the song as the singer describes preferring to pass away before his family rather than suffer the pain of seeing them mourn his loss.
The third verse is addressed to the singer's family, expressing his love for them and asking them not to pray for him as he will always be waiting for them, even as dust. The final lines invite the loved ones to continue living their lives and cherishing each moment, while the singer holds onto their love as he passes away.
