Living Life
Daniel Johnston Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hold me like a mother would
Like I've always known somebody should, yeah,
although tomorrow, it don't look that good
Well, it just goes to show

Though people say we're an unlikely couple
I'm seeing double of you
Oh,

This is life
And everything's all right
Living living living living living living
living life

Oh, hope for the hopeless
I'm learning to cope
with the emotion-less mediocracy
Oh.

Day-to-day living

I cannot help but be restless
When everything seems so tasteless

And all the colors seem to have faded away.

Oh,
This is life

And everything's all right
Living living living living living living
living life

Hold me like a mother would
Like I've always known somebody should, yeah.
although tomorrow, it don't look that good
Well, it just goes to show
Though people say we're an unlikely couple
Doris Day, and Mott the Hoople

Oh,

This is life
And everything's all right

Overall Meaning

In the song "Living Life," Daniel Johnston sings about the struggles of day-to-day existence and the search for comfort and hope. The opening lines of the song, "Hold me like a mother would / Like I've always known somebody should," suggest a deep yearning for affection and nurturing, as if the singer seeks a sense of security and protection that might be found in a mother's embrace. The lyrics also acknowledge the uncertainty and fear that often arise when facing an unpredictable future. Despite this sense of unease, the singer asserts that "everything's all right" and finds solace in the simple act of living.

The song's chorus repeats the phrase "Living living living living living living / living life," thereby emphasizing the importance of being fully present and engaged in the moment. In contrast to this positive image, the lyrics also mention the difficulties of facing a world that can seem dull, colorless, and unexciting. Johnston sings, "I cannot help but be restless / When everything seems so tasteless / And all the colors seem to have faded away." Here, the singer expresses a sense of alienation and dissatisfaction with the mundane aspects of everyday life.

Despite these challenges, the chorus of the song offers a ray of hope, suggesting that life can be worth living even in the face of adversity. Johnston sings, "This is life / And everything's all right," conveying a sense of acceptance and resilience that suggests a willingness to persevere even in the face of hardship.

I used to sit in the basement with Danny and listen to his songs when we were teenagers. I'm 55 now and to hear these brings back my childhood. Danny was my wonderful friend. We hung out and I played my guitar trying to follow along with his songs. He could draw anything back then. I would try to learn from him. I still have a cassette he made special for me. I remember the piano you are hearing him play in this song. If I close my eyes and listen, I am there in a dream..

I was friends with Danny back in the late 70s and early 80s before he moved to Texas. I used to sit next to him at his piano and he would play all these songs for me. I have known the words for years. I still have the tape he made for me. When I hear this I can picture his parents basement and the piano he played them on. I loved him as a brother then and love him the same now. It makes me sad he has suffered so much.

@johnfair62 one thing I have not seen mentioned in comments is how beautiful his singing voice was. He really sang like one of God's own angels.

How is it possible to listen to so many of one artist's pieces, and love the next one even more than the last?  I just can't believe it.  It's like he knows exactly who I am, and has written all of his songs just for me.
