Vaya Con Dios
Daniel O'Donnell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now the hacienda's dark, the town is sleeping
Now the time has come to part, the time for weeping

Vaya con Dios my darling
Vaya con Dios my love

Now the village mission bells are softly ringing
If you listen with your heart you'll hear them singing

Vaya con Dios my darling
Vaya con Dios my love

Wherever you may be, I'll be beside you
Although you're many million dreams away
Each night I'll say a prayer, a prayer to guide you
To hasten every lonely hour of every lonely day
Now the dawn is breaking through a gray tomorrow
But the memories we share are there to borrow

Vaya con Dios, my darling
Vaya con Dios my love

Vaya con Dios, my darling
Vaya con Dios my love

Overall Meaning

The opening verse of the song "Vaya con Dios" by Daniel O'Donnell and Mary Duff depicts a melancholic picture of a hacienda at night, with the town asleep as the singers are preparing to depart from each other. The use of dark and sleeping town creates a sense of loneliness and despair that echoes the mood of the song. The chorus, "Vaya con Dios my darling, Vaya con Dios my love," suggests that the song is a bittersweet goodbye rather than an affirmation of love. The second verse introduces the sound of the village mission bells ringing softly, which has a calming effect, indicating that the singer wants to console the other, reminding them that they are always close. The line, "If you listen with your heart you'll hear them singing," is an invitation to the other to focus on their inner self so that they can find solace within themselves. The final verse describes the arrival of a new day, with the memories of the love shared serving as a source of comfort, a reminder that the love they shared will remain with them, even though they're no longer together.

Im from South Africa. I by accident came across them singing.I love them they are great together. Their voices compliments each other. Simply beautifull. I was in tears when they sang Whispering Hope as it was my Moms favourite song. Mom passed on 1996.

When I first saw her perform this song on TV, I immediately fell in love with her voice. She has one of the most beautiful singing voices I've ever heard and easy on the eyes to boot. God Bless, Jeff :)

I reckon Daniel & Mary duets are twice as good as Daniel by himself - I know this is probably controversial, but Mary's voice just adds the "X" factor to every song they sing together. Beautiful.
