Dannii first broke out of her sister's shadow in 1997 with the album Girl. Whilst Kylie Minogue was experimenting with dark lyrics, indie collaborations and moody images (Impossible Princess), Dannii went out and out for the dancefloor with the huge hit All I Wanna Do. Unfortunately, the album that it was from only reached No. 57. However, Dannii herself has said, "This was a big turning point for me. It has led me on to the album Neon Nights and my collaborations with many club DJs and remixers".
2001 was a success for Dannii, when her vocals were part of Riva's Who Do You Love Now?, which laid the foundations for her fourth album Neon Nights released in March 2003.
Moving to London Records, Dannii made more credible dance tracks including I Begin To Wonder and Put The Needle On It. In 2003, Dannii released her fourth album, Neon Nights. It was a surprise chart success, reaching no.8 in the UK charts and eventually achieving gold status, selling over 100,000 copies. The album also made gold certification in Australia. Dannii also teamed up with chill-out Ibiza stars Afterlife for a collaboration on their Speck of Gold album. Dannii's star was beginning to shine in its own right.
In 2004, after a top 10 album and four top 10 singles, Dannii moved to All Around The World Records. Her first single for AATW was You Won't Forget About Me, which saw Dannii's vocals layered on top of the instrumental hit Flower Power and landed at no.7 in the UK charts, making it Dannii's fifth consecutive top 10 hit. You Won't Forget About Me was followed up in 2005 by Perfection, on which Dannii teamed up with the Soul Seekerz, which narrowly missed out on the top 10 in the UK, peaking at no.11. In 2006, she returned with So Under Pressure and her Greatest Hits album The Hits & Beyond.
Dannii has been a judge on British television channel ITV's The X Factor since 2007 alongside Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole and Louis Walsh.
In November 2007, Girl and Neon Nights were re-released with bonus discs, with a new studio album Club Disco and compilation album Unleashed appearing within the following weeks. A stand alone single Touch Me Like That was released in December 2007. It was later included on the re-release of Club Disco released in Australia in the spring 2008.
Later in 2008, the logical and long-overdue duet with her own sister finally was released as Kylie & Dannii recorded a cover of ABBA's The Winner Takes It All appeared on the soundtrack album to the shortlived BBC show Beautiful People.
Put the Needle on It
Dannii Minogue Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Take the bait, bite the line, I got the place, you got the time,
I'm lickin my lips, did I make you blush?
I let you in, the sweat you're in, the temperature is risin,
So hot, I may want to take my clothes off.
Come inside, you're drippin desire, let the music make you rise up,
Dirty hands is what I demand, let the music make you rise up.
Put the needle on it, I'll tell you where I want it,
Come on and spin me on it, all my freaks say.
Put the needle on it, I could tell you where I want it,
Come on and spin me on it, all my freaks say.
I dare you now to be bad, do you want the best you've ever had?
You look so tame boy, let me wild you up.
Keep the lights dark and low, I'll keep you up all night,
Until you feel it vibrating through your bones.
Come inside, you're trapped inside, let the music make you rise up,
Dirty hands is what I demand, let the music make you rise up.
Chorus x 2
Dirty hands, I demand. All my freeks say.
Chorus
Put the needle on it.
The lyrics of Dannii Minogue's song Put the Needle on It explicitly urge the listener to let go and indulge in the pleasures of life, particularly through music and physical attraction. The opening verse seems to be addressing someone who is hesitant or unsure, encouraging them to take the bait and bite the line. The use of the phrase "lickin my lips" suggests that the singer is excited by the prospect of what's to come, and they've brought the other person to a place where they can both let loose. The next lines indicate that the temperature is rising, both literally and figuratively, and that the singer is so hot that they may want to take off their clothes. This could be interpreted as a metaphor for letting down one's guard and being vulnerable, especially in a sexual context.
The second verse takes a more commanding tone, daring the listener to be "bad" and promising to unleash their wild side. The use of darkness and the imagery of the body vibrating through the music create a sense of physical urgency and visceral pleasure. The chorus, which repeats several times, emphasizes the message that the singer wants the other person to "put the needle on it," which can be interpreted as a metaphor for turning up the volume on life and embracing one's desires. The repeated use of the phrase "all my freaks say" suggests that the singer is addressing a larger group of people who share their philosophy of living life to the fullest.
Overall, the song can be seen as a celebration of hedonism and the power of music to liberate us from our inhibitions. The lyrics are straightforward and unabashedly sensual, encouraging the listener to let go and enjoy the moment. While some may view this as shallow or irresponsible, the song can also be interpreted as a call to break free from societal norms and expectations and embrace one's true desires.
