I used to watch Gabor at The Lighthouse, he usually played a Fender Twin other times a Toby circular amp that he sat on,
he really could mesmerize audiences with his playing, he'd stand in a crouch bent over his Martin sometimes tweaking the pickup in the sound hole, a fellow I know worked on his guitars said he used flat wound 13's set. I think the recordings he did with Van Gelder captured his sound perfectly. Very tragic he died so young.

This vinyl is packed a way with several others of Gabor Szabo.  So good to hear it again.

Gabor Szabo with Willy Bobo on congas at Memory Lane, a long time ago, bought this album, played it forever. Gabor did the drawing for the album cover.

Not sure which came first Spellbinder or Gypsy 66 but It brings back great memories when
I was a young disc jockey in San Diego playing jazz from midnight to 6am. I played Gypsy
66 to lead off my show... this music still holds up today... of course ALL good music does!!!
Gabor Szabo was a huge talent... later sadly He went commercial. You have to make a buck.

Gypsy was his debut LP. Played it to death and now have a mint copy that I take good care of and only play with a high quality stylus.

He first appeared playing with Chico Hamilton in 1962. Passin' Thru is one of my favorite LPs.

bill niland

can you imagine holding that drum beat all through the recording???
