AWAKENING
Danny Lohner/Josh Freese/Richard Patrick/The Damning Well/Wes Borland Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It begins with the father of sin
I walk alone in the garden of stones
I turn into the monster within
Life is too long for me
Life is too wrong for me
'Cause there's something that
That I miss being human
I realize
That I miss being human
Nothing Times
I lose control as the story unfolds
I have been like a knife to bare skin
I walk alone like a king with no throne
I burn up from the monster within
Life is too long for me
Life is too wrong for me
'Cause there's something that
I realize
That I miss being human
I realize
That I miss being human
Nothing Times
I like hunting the pieces
I like hunting the pieces
I like hunting the pieces
'Cause I have come to need this
I like hunting the pieces
I like hunting the pieces
'Cause I have come to need this
Shell
'Cause there's something that
I realize
That I miss being human
'Cause there's something that
I realize
That I miss being human
I teach lies
That I miss being human
I teach lies
That I miss being human
I teach lies
The lyrics of "Awakening" by The Damning Well convey a sense of being lost in one's own darkness and the struggle to reclaim the humanity within oneself. The opening line "out of control of a history untold" suggests a feeling of being trapped by one's own past or perhaps even family history, with the reference to "the father of sin" implying a struggle with inherited or ingrained behaviors. The lines "I walk alone in the garden of stones" and "I walk alone like a king with no throne" speak to a sense of loneliness and isolation in the midst of one's own struggles.
The chorus of the song, where the singer expresses missing being human, underscores this theme of struggling to find or hold on to one's own humanity. The reference to "hunting the pieces" suggests a search for something within oneself, perhaps parts that have been lost or buried. The repetition of "I teach lies" at the end of the song might speak to a sense of being unable to fully express oneself or live authentically.
Overall, the lyrics of "Awakening" paint a picture of someone battling their own inner demons and trying to find a path back to a sense of humanity and connection with others.

Fun fact, Amy Lee was supposed to be the back up singer for this supergroup, did vocal takes, but her vocals had to be cut out due to recording contract issues on her end.
