Born in 1970 and raised in Kitchener, Ontario , he began his professional career playing with the Rhinos before beginning a solo career. In the late 1990s, he moved to Ottawa, where he developed a loyal following with a weekly show at the Manx Pub on Elgin St. In his live shows, he often uses looped live samples of his guitar and other instruments to create a richly layered solo performance. While at the Manx he often entertained with cover versions of songs by some of his favourite artists, including David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, and the Rheostatics. At the same time, he began to amass an extensive repertoire of original tunes, and briefly joined local power-pop band Starling.
As a songwriter, he has released six albums, including an album devoted to covers David Bowie songs. His albums have often been recorded in a home-studio with him performing most, if not all, instruments. He is a talented guitarist who is universally lauded for his lyrics, having been compared to Elvis Costello and received accolades from renowned Canadian author Timothy Findley.
In 2004, Danny was nominated for Best New Artist at the Juno Awards following the release of his album "Tales from the Invisible Man" the previous year. The award went to Michael Bublé.
Feather Fur & Fin
Danny Michel Lyrics

to escape the noise and lights
I laid there in the pine cones all night
I woke in the morning
and all the trees were gone
I got this sinking feeling
everything felt wrong
and diesel in the air
So I slept in a row boat
and I anchored far from shore
Now I don't hear them chainsaws no more
I woke in the morning
when someone pulled the plug
I was stranded in the lake bottom sludge
With all the tires, paint cans and things
Well,
Every little critter
with feather, fur & fin
cried to Mother Nature
to come back for them
for every piece of litter
for every little sin
She cried for all of them
feather, fur & fin
She cried for all of them
feather, fur & fin
So I went to an island
down the Caribbean way
And I laid there in the sand all day
I turned on a radio
and I heard the DJ say:
Well, batten down the hatches
down Santa Elena way
I swam the ocean reef,
with coral all was gray
Every little critter
with feather, fur & fin
cried to Mother Nature
to come back for them
for every piece of litter
for every little sin
She cried for all of them
feather, fur & fin
She cried for all of them
feather, fur & fin
She saw the eagle's eye
weeping in the willow
She prayed to the mantis
and she cried into her pillow
for the salmon in the Fraser
and the salamander's kin
She cried for all of them
feather, fur & fin
She cried for all of them
feather, fur & fin
Well, I went to the city
when all the trees were gone
and I laid there on a asphalt lawn
And she cried out a thousand days
of hurricanes and floods
Her face ran with tears
and the streets ran with blood
Fur coats and sushi boats
and diesel in the air
Every little critter
with feather, fur & fin
cried to Mother Nature
to come back for them
for every piece of litter
for every little sin
She cried for all of them
feather, fur & fin
She cried for all of them
feather, fur & fin
Feather, fur & fin
she cried for all of them
for feather, fur & fin,
she cried for every fin
The lyrics of "Feather Fur & Fin" by Danny Michel are about the destruction of nature for human convenience and pleasure, and the consequences that come with it. The song is divided into three stanzas, each one taking place in a different setting - the country, an island, and the city - and each showing a different aspect of how humans are damaging the environment. In the first stanza, the singer goes to the country to escape the noise and lights of the city, but wakes up to find that all the trees have been cut down, leaving him with a feeling of emptiness and despair. He seeks refuge on a rowboat, far from the sound of the chainsaws.
In the second stanza, the singer travels to an island in the Caribbean and enjoys the beauty of the natural environment, but learns from a radio announcement that a hurricane is coming, and the animals are in danger. In the final stanza, the singer returns to the city where he finds that nature has been destroyed by urbanization, and the pollution caused by human activities is causing natural disasters. Mother Nature cries for the creatures with "feather, fur, and fin" that are suffering because of human greed, and the singer joins in her lament. Danny Michel has beautifully juxtaposed the peacefulness of nature with the destruction it faces due to humanity's neglect of the environment.
