The band was formed following the dissolution of Grand Drive in which Danny performed with his brother Julian Wilson. They recorded originally as an impromptu demo session at a farm within the grounds of the Truck Festival. The demo and overall success of the recorded sound prompted Danny to form Danny & the Champions of the World and record their first self-titled album on Loose Music in 2008. Critics and fans noted a distinct departure from the music of Grand Drive; instead making references to a more Alt Country sound.
The band recorded their second album "Streets of Our Time" in 2010. The band released the album on Loose Records. Danny & The Champions of the World recorded the album whilst on tour with The Magic Numbers and The Drive By Truckers'. Streets of Our Time was met with much critical acclaim and marked an end to Wilson’s folk infused leanings.
In February 2011 Danny George Wilson signed a worldwide publishing/ production deal with Southern Crossroads Music and went into the studio to record Hearts & Arrows. The album was mixed by Ted Hutt at his King Size Studios based in Los Angeles, California, USA.
Danny George Wilson recorded ‘Tougher Than The Rest’ for a Limited Edition Bruce Springsteen tribute 7” EP for Record Store Day, alongside fellow contributors The Magic Numbers, Willie Nile and Billy Franks.
On 3 February 2016 Danny and the Champions of the World dominated the inaugural UK Americana Awards taking home the gongs for UK Artist of the year, UK Album of the year for What Kind of Love and UK Song of the year for Clear Water.

I find peace when I’m alone
These days
I finally gained some self-control
And You know I
Wanna tell the world
How to live your dreams and live in youth for eternity, oh no
You can get the left-right here on god, if you enter the zone, just leave me alone
I just need a 40 oz quick, and lil quick fix at home, and you know that
I’ll be good
I’ll be good

I ain’t no pillow talking
Nigga
I rather drink my liquor
Roll a couple Swisher
And watch me do my dance
I ain’t yo son or lil niga
Lord, please save a niga
My momma raised a Killa
So I killed romance
Love slow dances, and sells xans to pay her dance school
Lost labs pants, finna sag throughout the classroom
I’ve been bad, I know karmas in the restroom stalling
So we hold hands, make plans, to get away soon
Her best friends, got mans that can’t impress you
The way you shaped my heart, I won’t forget you now
These days
I find peace when I’m alone
These days
I finally gained some self control
And You know I
Wanna tell the world
How to live your dreams and live in youth for eternity, oh no
You can get the left-right here on god, if you enter the zone, just leave me alone
You get can left-right here on god, if you enter the zone, just leave me alone
I just need a 40 oz quick, and lil quick fix at home, and you know that
I’ll be good
I’ll be good
Hello hello hello
Babygirl it’s nice to meet ya
I be your baby father, cmon show me that you need one
I know we young n dumb, and love is blind but here some reasons
To show you that I’m decent, and I’ll keep you on your feet
I know you heard me on your phone speakers, call me Mr. Eager
I call you up for dumb shit, you call me when u need me
You make me, stop breathing, you blow me into pieces
Is it true that a god can hold it down with a demon
The lyrics to Danny and the Champions of the World's song "These Days" touch heavily on themes of self-discovery, self-control, and independence. The singer finds peace in being alone and gaining control over themselves. They are confident in their ability to live life on their own terms and do not want to be told how to live or what to do. The repeated phrase "You can get left-right here on god, if you enter the zone, just leave me alone" emphasizes this desire for autonomy and a need to be left alone to pursue their own path. The singer also touches on their tough upbringing, being raised to be a "killer" and not believing in romance. However, they still long for connection and companionship, and are willing to put in the effort to build a meaningful relationship.
