Scorpion
Dar Williams/Lucy Kaplansky/Richard Shindell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In night, inside, at night
No whispers, no worries, no words
Just light fills the corner of your eye

Take me in, take me in

Cold sky, dark Montana, long road
Running fence, radio, trucks blow by
Up high, no air, big dreams
Take me back, take me back

I want to show you everything, everything
I want to give you everything, everything

There's a chance now and then, now and then
No more cut and run, No more cut and run

Blue night, blue world, tracking you
I'm a scorpion and I'm coming after you
Running out of darkness and time
Looking for you, looking for you

Gonna sting you with a kiss from my lips
Gonna sting you with a piece of my mind
Gonna sting you with a taste of my skin
Then you're mine, then you're mine

repeat chorus

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Dar Williams/Lucy Kaplansky/Richard Shindell's song "Scorpion" are rich in metaphor and imagery, describing a yearning for connection with someone in the vast expanse of Montana. The first verse paints a picture of a quiet, intimate moment between two people. The singer desires to be taken in by the other person, seeking a deeper level of emotional intimacy. The second verse shifts focus to the physical landscape, describing the loneliness of the Montana countryside and the singer's desire to return to a place where they had once shared a dream with the person they seek.

The chorus repeats the phrase, "I want to show you everything, everything / I want to give you everything, everything," expressing a deep desire to share all aspects of life with this other person, and a willingness to commit to the relationship ("no more cut and run"). The final verse compares the singer to a scorpion, pursuing the other person with fierce determination. The lyrics suggest the singer's desire to consume the other person ("gonna sting you with a kiss from my lips / gonna sting you with a taste of my skin"), which could be interpreted as sexual desire or a more metaphoric desire for total emotional intimacy.

Overall, the lyrics of "Scorpion" convey a powerful sense of longing and desire for intimacy. The rich imagery and metaphors imbue the song with a sense of depth and complexity, challenging the listener to delve deeper into the meaning behind the words.

The pair of songs by Lucy, "Scorpion" and "Ten Year Night" are two of the most romantic songs you can ever find. Both so sincere, sultry and poetic writing, remarkable songs, it somehow makes me sad that many people will go through life without ever hearing them.

@Stragglor

Saw Lucy in Columbus last year. Can't for her to return.

Never could understand how Lucy failed to capture the world's attention after Flesh and Bone. Such a beautiful, memorable, well-written album.
