"Hate You", written for and about Jay Bentley with whom he had a business-related argument that was also Brett's excuse for leaving the band, and
"Rules, Hearts". A Video was also shot for "Hate You" which was featured on the 1996 Epitaph video compilation "Feel lucky, punk?" that was given away to
buyers of newly released Epitaph albums.
After the release of Hate You, Brett wrote some additional material and said that the first album would be out in 1998, with a sound much more hardcore
than the single, similar to the old(er) Bad Religion albums.
"This is my creative outlet. It's not my business. It's something I do to keep my sanity. I'm not a rock star. I'm a record company owner" said Brett.
However, due to Bretts drug problems the whole project came to a halt and was finally abandoned alltogether when Brett rejoined Bad Religion in 2001.
In 2002 Brett was asked about the motivation for Hate You, to which he replied
"That was uncool of me. I was being bitter."

I Hate You
Daredevils Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Isn't a stand, man
To speak the words that everyone's heard
Isn't the way, man
Everybody knows
All things must come and go but
You know like I know that
People just come and go
They don't know what's right
Till they're gone
Your sun will rise and set today
Just don't you worry
And everything will come your way
Just don't you hurry
Take a little time
And find you some peace of mind then
You'll know like I know that
Everything's gonna be alright
People just come and go
They don't know what's right
Till they're gone
The lyrics to Daredevils's song "I Hate You" convey a message of acceptance and understanding. The opening line, "To take a look and walk away isn't a stand, man," suggests that simply ignoring a problem or conflict is not an effective solution. The following line, "To speak the words that everyone's heard isn't the way, man," suggests that ineffective communication is also not an adequate solution. The chorus then emphasizes the idea that all things must come and go, but everything will be alright in the end. People come and go in our lives, but they often do not understand what is right until they are gone.
The verse continues with the advice to not worry and to take the time to find peace of mind. The line "Your sun will rise and set today, just don't you worry" reminds us that life goes on and things will work out in the end. The final line, "People just come and go, they don't know what's right till they're gone," reinforces the motif of temporary connections in our lives and the need to appreciate and understand those who pass by.
Overall, the lyrics to "I Hate You" encourage us to make meaningful connections with others and to appreciate what we have in the present moment, even if it is fleeting. The message to not worry and find peace of mind is also an important reminder to slow down and appreciate life.
