Jordan
Darin & Brooke Aldridge Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Take Jesus as your daily guide
Though you may feel pure and safely
Without him walking by your side
But when you come to make the crossing
At the endin' of your pilgim's way
If you ever will meet our Saviour
You'll surely meet him on that day
Look at that wide river, oh hear the mighty billows roar
You'd better take Jesus with you, He's a true companion
For I'm sure without him that you never will make it o'er
That awful day of judgement
Is coming in the by and by
We'll see our Lord descending
In Glory from on high
So let us keep in touch with Jesus
And in his grace the love of God
That we may be ever called ready
When he calls us over Jordan's tide
Now look at that cold Jordan, look at these deep waters
Look at that wide river, oh hear the mighty billows roar
You'd better take Jesus with you, He's a true companion
For I'm sure without him that you never will make it o'er
Now look at that cold Jordan, look at these deep waters
Look at that wide river, oh hear the mighty billows roar
You'd better take Jesus with you, He's a true companion
For I'm sure without him that you never will make it o'er
Oh what, what you gonna do
Oh what, what you gonna say
Oh, how how you gonna feel
When you come to the end of the way?
The lyrics to Darin & Brooke Aldridge's song "Jordan" carry a strong message of faith and guidance through life's journey with the presence of Jesus as the ultimate companion and savior. The opening verses emphasize the importance of having Jesus as a guide and constant presence in one's life as they navigate the challenges and uncertainties that come their way. The imagery of walking alongside Jesus is portrayed as a source of purity and safety, offering comfort and assurance through life's trials.
As the lyrics transition into discussing the crossing over the river Jordan, a symbol of the transition from earthly life to the afterlife, the significance of having Jesus by one's side becomes even more pronounced. The imagery of the cold, deep waters and mighty billows of the river Jordan conveys a sense of foreboding and trepidation, highlighting the necessity of leaning on Jesus for support and guidance in facing the unknown and inevitable step into the afterlife.
The impending day of judgment and the anticipation of seeing the Lord descending in glory from on high underscores the themes of preparation and readiness for the final journey. The call to keep in touch with Jesus and abide in the grace and love of God is emphasized as a means of being prepared for the ultimate crossing over Jordan's tide. The repeated exhortation to take Jesus as a true companion reflects the belief that one's faith in Him is the key to successfully navigating the challenges and uncertainties of life and death.
In the final verses, the lyrics pose poignant questions about facing the end of the way, prompting introspection on one's beliefs, actions, and feelings as they approach the inevitable crossing over Jordan. The repetition of the admonition to take Jesus as a companion underscores the central message of the song - the importance of faith and reliance on Jesus in facing life's journey, the uncertainties of death, and the ultimate transition to the afterlife. The song serves as a powerful reminder of the need for spiritual preparation and guidance in navigating life's challenges and the journey towards eternal salvation.

I know that Ricky Skaggs could sing harmony to a cat in a wood chipper, but the particular mix of voices in this is simply spectacular. Mo Pitney is such a great singer. I wish he'd blow up big.

Without the South would we have music such as this?
I have had so much respect for these folks long before they gathered in this church!
