Cry Me a River
Dario Marianelli Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You cry the whole night thorough
Well, you can cry me a river, cry me a river
I cried a river over you
Now you say you're sorry
For bein' so untrue
Well, you can cry me a river, cry me a river
I cried a river over you
You drove me, nearly drove me out of my head
While you never shed a tear
Remember, I remember all that you said
Told me love was too plebeian
Told me you were through with me and
Now you say you love me
Well, just to prove you do
Come on and cry me a river, cry me a river
I cried a river over you
I cried a river over you
I cried a river over you
The lyrics to Dario Marianelli's song "Cry Me a River" are a response to a former lover who has recently expressed loneliness and regret for their past actions. The singer tells this person that they can cry their tears, and that the singer has already cried a river over their former lover. The lyrics are bitter and resentful, as the singer remembers the pain the former lover caused them through their untruthfulness and indifference, even as the former lover denied the value of their relationship.
The song's melancholy melody and slow tempo accentuate the depth of emotion expressed in the lyrics. The use of the river metaphor to describe the tears shed over the former lover reinforces the singer's argument that they have already endured the pain of separation and are uninterested in reconciling with their former lover. The repeated phrase "cry me a river" serves as a biting retort to the former lover's newfound regret, suggesting that it is too little, too late to make amends.
