It Won't Be Like This For Long
Darius Rucker Lyrics

He didn't have to wake up
He'd been up all night
Laying there in bed listening
To his new born baby cry
He makes a pot of coffee
He splashes water on his face
His wife gives him a kiss and says
It gonna be OK

It wont be like this for long
One day soon we'll look back laughin'
At the week we brought her home
This phase is gonna fly by
So baby just hold on
It wont be like this for long

Four years later bout four thirty
She's crawling in their bed
And when he drops her off at preschool
She's clinging to his leg
The teacher peels her off of him
He says what can I do
She says now don't you worry
This will only last a week or two

It wont be like this for long
One day soon we'll look back laughin'
At the week we brought her home
This phase is gonna fly by
So baby just hold on
It wont be like this for long

One day soon she'll be a teenager
And at times you'll think she hates him
Then he'll walk her down the isle
And he'll raise her veil
But right now she up and crying
And the truth is that he don't mind
As he kisses her good night
And she says her prayers
He lays down there beside her
Till her eyes are finally closed
And just watching her it breaks his heart
Cause he already knows
It wont be like this for long
One day soon that little girl is gonna be
All grown up and gone
Yeah this phase is gonna fly by
He's trying to hold on

It won't be like this for long
It won't be like this for long

Overall Meaning

Darius Rucker's song "It Won't Be Like This for Long" is a beautiful ode to the impermanence of life and the preciousness of moments. The song chronicles the growth of a daughter from a newborn to a teenage girl and the inevitable passing of time. The song speaks of a father's experience of watching his daughter grow up and how much he cherishes the different stages of her life.

The song opens with the father being awakened by his newborn baby's cries. He has been up all night and is exhausted. His wife reassures him that everything is going to be okay and that this phase of their life will soon pass. The father takes comfort in this, knowing that the difficulties of having a newborn are only temporary.

The song then moves on to describe different moments in the life of the daughter, from when she is crawling into her parents' bed at four years old to when she is a teenager who seemingly hates her father. Throughout all of these stages, the father is there, holding on to the memories and cherishing each moment he has with his daughter. The song ends with the father watching his daughter as she falls asleep, knowing that time is fleeting and that she will soon grow up and leave home.

Overall, the song is a heartbreaking but beautiful tribute to the fleeting nature of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with the people we love.

June 12, 2 days after my daughter was born. I was taken care of her alone, no mother around! I heard this amazing song. It help me so much. Single father with a 2day old baby girl. She is now 10, and I'm still watching her grow. Thank you darius for this song!

I feel you there this song is so had to listen to without crying especially since IV got kids that ages match the first 2 verses (3 weeks and 3 years old) and I live in separate houses from both of their dads, I have the older one pretty much every night by myself and have to take him to preschool in the morning and the little one every night except when we stay over night at her dads so im up all night pretty much every night

You may be tired after work, but when she or he wants to go outside and kick the ball around, go out and do it. There will come a time that they won't be around to ask you to play with them.

@saveyourself7

Thank you for this comment. I appreciate the time with my kids a lot more tired or not

My oldest just moved out yesterday. I was listening to this and just replaying all kinds of moments from her growing up. First words. First steps. Dropping her off for school. HS Graduation. And now off to college. When they say “it won’t be like this for long”, they don’t tell you how quick it really is.
