The Awakening
Dark At Dawn Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

600 years ago, when the tyrant had to die
all the horror and the torment had an end
and man could laugh again while the corpse was burning high
and they strewed away his ashes in the wind

and they carved a sign on the castle's walls
for eternity to stay
never to all the awakening, oh never lift the veil

when the blood pours out of the dungeon's walls
when the spirits cry as the darkness falls
the torture will rise from its ashes to return again

when the moon is darkened and the candle's low
and the mystic cold winds of old wisdom blow
on the stones, it rises again to flay

Procession takes its way to the ruin on the hill
conjuration takes its toll, but they don't know
a pair of evil eyes watch the disappearing moon
and can't wait for the blood that soon will flow

in darkness now there fades the light,
it appears the final sign
the withering flower, he prepares to cross the line

the thunder breaks the sky, the lightning hits the walls
they have gone too far, an unknown creature cries
beware the bleeding stones and the final tear it falls
the quest, here is the end, the caller dies

the creature disappears in the night, ancient powers are unleashed
once again to sow a malicious seed

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Dark At Dawn's song The Awakening tell a story of an event that happened 600 years ago in which a tyrant was killed, bringing an end to terror and suffering. The people celebrated by burning the corpse and spreading its ashes in the wind. A sign was carved on the wall of the castle as a reminder of the event. However, the lyrics warn that the awakening must never happen again - suggesting that another tyrant may rise in the future.

The lyrics describe a dark and ominous world where the torture and horror of the past rise again to terrorize the people. The blood pouring out of the dungeon walls and the spirits crying as darkness falls paint a vivid image of fear and despair. Even the moon and candlelight cannot light the way through this darkness. There is an impending sense of doom as a pair of evil eyes watch and wait for the blood that will soon flow. The song builds in intensity as the thunder breaks the sky, the lightning hits the walls, and an unknown creature cries out in warning.

Overall, The Awakening is a cautionary tale against the rise of tyranny and the consequences that come with it. The lyrics create a vivid image of a world where evil has triumphed and darkness reigns. The song warns that once awakened, the malicious powers of darkness will be unleashed again, threatening to destroy everything in their path.

You begin the game as a no-name NPC mercenary known as Shez. You meet your first comrade and boss of the company “Captain Berling”. You realize you are about to start your life as a mercenary in the Fire Emblem Three Houses Universe. Awesome!

She then of course says: “We’re facing off against Jecht’s Mercenaries.” This way WE become the most famous and strongest mercenary group around!

Veterans of Fire Emblem Three Houses now start to feel….foreshadowing dread?

You enjoy the power of Shez! You tear through Jecht’s first scouts. You think to yourself “Hah! I’m the next Guts of this world!”

Suddenly Jecht’s hardened mercenaries arrive, fully surrounding your entire mercenary squad, outmaneuvering you with superior tactics. The other two mercenaries that you considered compatriots are hopelessly losing their individual fights.

You helplessly listen to them being slaughtered.

You realize your in over your head. Byleth, the Ashen Demon appears.

The scary music kicks in. The main character of the Three Houses franchise. The vessel and reincarnation of the green haired space Jesus that is Sothis KILLS your boss and mentor Berling like she was a mere nobody!
You finally face off against Byleth. And quickly realize you have no chance in winning. You’re gonna die.

You then are greeted by the ethereal Arval. An unknown powerful entity that promises to lend you its power to survive.

You transform into a new being with powers similar to those used by the Old Guard of “Those who Slither in the Dark” and THIS SONG kicks in.

And you STILL can’t win against the Ashen Demon. (Byleth accomplishes this without the sword of creator as well)

You suddenly realize you’re not as powerful as you thought in the beginning….you’re gonna need more power if you’re gonna kill the Ashen Demon.

And with Shez’s survival and Arval’s awakening you alter the Three Hopes timeline with this time consuming fight for Jecht’s Mercenaries.

How will Shez now fare against the world with this newfound dark power?

Around 0:09 hearing Shez saying “I not going to die here” just bring a lot hype and continue fighting nonstop

bitrel07

Considering that Shez temporarily 'unlocked' it back during the first prologue battle against Byleth out of sheer will to survive against the Ashen Demon, it's only fitting.
