Say the Word
Dark Dark Dark Lyrics

All the words you say
Say the words you say at the end of the day
Say the words you say
And me I've said them too
I've said them too
I've said them too
When all that I say is lost
Oh my tongue is tired
Oh all that I say is lost
My tongue is tired of trying
Oh all that I say is lost
Oh my tongue is tired
Oh the sign you make at the end of the day
Oh the sign you make
Make the sign you make at the end of the day
Make the sign you make
And me I've made it too
I've made it too
I've made it too
But what do signs mean to me now?
When all of my dreams are gone
Oh, Oh, Oh
All of my dreams are gone
Though something rise that's bigger than me
Oh all of my dreams are gone
Something beyond my reach
Oh the breath you take at the end of the day
Oh the breath you take
Take the breath you take at the end of the day
Take the breath you take
And me I'll take one too
I'll take one too
I'll take one too
The lyrics of Dark Dark Dark’s “Say the Word” are exploring the meaning and impact of language, gestures, and emotions. The repetition of the phrase “say the word” and the variations of it such as “make the sign” and “take the breath” highlight the importance of communication, but also the limit of it. The singer is acknowledging that words, signs, and breaths are all important in expressing oneself, but they are also fleeting and sometimes inadequate. The repetition of the lines “but what do words/signs mean to me now?” emphasizes the uncertainty and disillusionment that the singer feels about language and its ability to convey meaning. The final lines “though something rise that's bigger than me/something beyond my reach” suggest that despite the limitations of language, there may still be hope for something greater beyond our understanding.
The song is a slow, melancholy ballad that relies heavily on piano and accordion melodies. The arrangement creates an intimate and introspective atmosphere that matches the reflective nature of the lyrics. Singer Nona Marie Invie’s haunting voice lends emotional depth to the words, while the band’s instrumentation builds up the tension and the mood.
