Their lyrical themes have traditionally pertained to Satanism and anti-Christianity. Certain past and present members including Blackmoon, Ahriman, Caligula and Chaq Mol have each declared an affinity for Satanism, with Ahriman and Caligula notably being practitioners of LaVeyan Satanism. In their earlier years, their lyrical themes usually revolved specifically around depictions of Hell and Satan. After Emperor Magus Caligula joined the band, their lyrics came to focus more on blasphemy and anti-Christian rhetoric, although there have been several exceptions to this.
The group have released seven full-length albums and are one of the most prominent acts in the Swedish black metal scene.
Dark Funeral was founded by guitarists Blackmoon (David Parland) and Lord Ahriman in 1993. Shortly afterwards drummer Draugen and bassist and vocalist Themgoroth joined the band. Their self-titled and self-financed EP, Dark Funeral, was recorded in 1994 at Dan Swanö's Unisound studio in January. It was released on May 4, the same day the band performed their first gig at Luse Lottes Pub in Oslo, Norway, alongside bands such as fellow live debut band Gorgoroth and Marduk (who performed their first show abroad). After the recording sessions, Draugen left the band and was replaced by Equimanthorn.
The Dawn No More Rises
Dark Funeral Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
When blood rains from darkened skies and crying angels die
When the sun has burned its last rays and light no more remains
When tears of God stains the ground the dark age has arrived
Lighting strikes the realm of light
Angels burn in flames of fire
Storms from hell embrace the skies
Infernal winds
Come forth from the abyss
Satan rides the winds of wrath
Across the blackened sky
The dawn no more rises
Across the darkened horizons
Light no more shines
Over the kingdom of damnation
When shadows rise upon the earth and the horned one had returned
When light has turned to darkness and heaven has been burned
Lighting strikes the realm of light
Angels burn in flames of fire
Storms from hell embrace the skies
As blackwinged hordes arrive
Infernal winds
Come forth from the abyss
Satan rides the winds of wrath
Across the blackened sky
When firestorms consume the earth
And ashes is what's left
Everlasting darkness
Forever shall remain
When the sun no more rises
Over the darkened horizons
When damnation is eternal
The dark age has arrived
The dawn no more rises
Across the darkened horizons
Light no more shines
The dark age has arrived
The lyrics to Dark Funeral's song The Dawn No More Rises describe a scenario in which darkness has fallen upon the world and the forces of evil have triumphed over those of light. The first verse speaks of blood raining from the sky and angels dying, implying that some sort of cosmic battle or apocalypse has occurred. The second verse describes the arrival of black-winged hordes and infernal winds from the abyss, led by Satan himself. The chorus declares that the dawn will no longer rise and that light will no longer shine over the kingdom of damnation.
The third verse adds to the sense of finality and hopelessness, stating that the horned one has returned and that heaven has been burned. The fourth and final verse concludes with a vision of everlasting darkness and damnation, with the sun no longer rising and the world consumed by firestorms and ashes.
Overall, the lyrics paint a bleak and apocalyptic picture of a world where evil has triumphed and the forces of light have been defeated. The imagery of blood, flames, and infernal winds is vivid and intense, making for a powerful and evocative song.
