The Boy I'm Gonna Marry
Darlene Love Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning | Line by Line Meaning

Today I met the boy I'm gonna marry
He's all I wanted all my life and even more
He smiled at me and the music started playing
Here comes the bride when he walked through the door
Today I met the boy I'm gonna marry
The boy who's life and dreams and love I want to share
The boy whose on my hand a band of gold will bear
The band of gold I always dreamed I'd wear

When we kissed I felt a sweet sensation
This time it wasn't just my imagination
Today I met the boy I'm gonna marry
He's just what I've been waiting for oh yes
With every kiss, oh this is it as if my heart keeps saying
Today I met the boy I'm gonna marry

When we kissed I felt a sweet sensation
This time it wasn't just my imagination
Today I met the boy I'm gonna marry
He's just what I've been waiting for oh yes
With every kiss, oh this is it as if my heart keeps saying
Today I met the boy I'm gonna marry, yeah, yeah, yeah
Today I met the boy

Today I met the boy, yeah, yeah
Today I met the boy

Overall Meaning

Darlene Love's "The Boy I'm Gonna Marry" is a classic love song about finally finding the one you want to spend the rest of your life with. The song is narrated by a woman who has met the man of her dreams, the one she will marry. She describes her instant connection to him and the overwhelming feeling of love that she has never experienced before. The music starts playing when he smiles at her, indicating that this is the moment she has been waiting for. She sees the future with him, where they will share their lives, dreams, and love. The mention of the "band of gold" that she always dreamt of wearing symbolizes her desire for commitment that will last a lifetime. When they kiss, she feels a "sweet sensation," which assures her that this love is real and her heart echoes the same sentiment.

This song is a perfect representation of the girl group sound of the early 60s, which was extremely popular at the time. The catchy melody and emotional lyrics made it one of the most beloved songs of its time. The song was written by Phil Spector, Ellie Greenwich, and Jeff Barry, who were well-known for their involvement in the music scene in the 60s. Phil Spector was the producer behind many of the girl group hits, and "The Boy I'm Gonna Marry" was no exception.

Today I met the boy I'm gonna marry
He's all I've wanted all my life and even more
He smiled at me, and, gee, the music started playing
"Here Comes the Bride" when he walked through the door

Today I met the boy I'm gonna marry
The boy whose life and dream and love I want to share
For on my hand a band of gold appeared before me
The band of gold I always dreamed I'd wear

When we kissed, I felt a sweet sensation
This time it wasn't just my imagination

Today I met the boy I'm gonna marry
He's just what I've been waiting for, oh, yeah
With every kiss, "Oh, this is it," my heart keeps saying
Today I met the boy I'm going to marry

When we kissed, I felt a sweet sensation
This time it wasn't just my imagination

Today I met the boy I'm gonna marry
He's just what I've been waiting for, oh, yeah
With every kiss, "Oh, this is it," my heart keeps saying
Today I met the boy I'm going to marry
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Oh, yeah
Today I met the boy
Mm-mm-mm-mm
Today I met
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

I met The Boy Iโ€™m Going To Marry on the first day my family and I moved to our new house 300 miles away from our old one. He was mowing the lawn when we arrived, along with the moving van.
I was 17. 52 years later, weโ€™re still married. This song is my life.

My father told me a story about this song a few years ago. He said Darlene Love was a stand in for a singer who at the last minute was ill. The band was going to be in the area of Phil Spector's studio for a short time so they asked Darlene Love if she could sing the song with the band. She said yes and everyone was sold on the first rendition! She has always been a great talent. David Letterman would have her sing her xmas song every year on his show to open the season. Now she is singing that xmas song on The View every year. I've always loved her voice even though she's from my parents generation. I prefer her version because her voice is love and beauty just as she is a lady!

That, Last David Letterman Xmas Special, I wish, That I could have been there, cause, DARLENE LOVE, brought, the house, that performance, will never be Duplicated!!!

Same Letterman shows, I think, that had the sublime "Lone Ranger" anecdote told each year by Jay Thomas. Great annual event. As much as I admire Johnny Carson and Colbert, Letterman is tops with me.

It was reported that she also sang lead on "He's A Rebel," under the name of The Crystals. It was reported that LaLa, lead of The Crystals, heard the release of the song on the radio while driving on the East coast. DANG! Spector was a piece of work back then.
