You Said
Darlene Zschech/Hillsong Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You said, "ask and you will receive whatever you need."
You said, "pray and I'll hear from heaven,
And I'll heal your land."

You said Your glory will fill the earth
Like water the sea.
You said, "lift up your eyes;
The harvest is here, the kingdom is near."

You said, "ask and I'll give the nations to you."

Oh Lord, that's the cry of my heart.
Distant shores and the islands will see

Overall Meaning

the true light shining in us.
We will rise, shining with your glory.

The lyrics of Darlene Zschecch/Hillsong's song, "You Said," is a beautiful expression of faith and trust in God's promises. The song is a reminder to believers that God is faithful and that His word is true. The lyrics convey the message that when we pray and trust in God, He will answer our prayers and fulfill His promises.

The song starts by reminding us of God's promise that when we ask, we will receive. God is always ready to provide us with whatever we need, and all we have to do is ask Him. The second line assures us that when we pray, God hears us from heaven and will heal our land. This line refers to the power of prayer and how it can bring healing and restoration to our lives and the world around us.

The next verse talks about God's promise to the world. His glory will fill the earth, just like the waters of the sea. This refers to the spread of the gospel message to all parts of the world. The line "lift up your eyes; the harvest is here, the kingdom is near" is a call to arms for the church. God's kingdom is near, and it is our responsibility to bring it to earth through evangelism and disciple-making.

The final verse is a plea to God, asking Him to give us the nations so that we can spread His message to the ends of the earth. The song ends with a declaration that we will shine with His glory, and people from distant shores and islands will see the light of God shining through us.

I miss the old Hillsong under the leadership of Darlene Zschech. I believe one the reason they rose to the top was because they put Jesus before themselves. I don't think they wanted to be stars, but as they made Jesus the star, He exalted them and in my opinion they became the best Christian singing group in the world. Their albums in the 90s and the first decade of 2000 testify to this. I had the privilege of visiting Hillsong Church in Baulkham Hills, Australia in 2007. I took the bus there from Sydney. As I remember, people from different nations lined up to get on buses to go to attend the Church at Baulkham Hills. This happened because by this time, they were internationally known. The new generation singers are good also, but this old group will always have a special place in my heart. Their songs were and still are a blessing! Perhaps another reason why a number of us like this old group is because I don't think up until they arrived, no singing Christian group to my knowledge had done what they did.
