Describing themselves as “string-rock”, the band started up in 2009 and quickly took hold of New England’s musical imagination. Playing over 100 shows during their first year of touring, the band created a seamless, exhilarating sound at the intersection of rock, classical, and folk music. Their self-produced six-song EP 1 earned high praise for its craftsmanship and originality, and their brand new subscription album Pilot Machines was released in 2012.
Futures
Darlingside Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
A future ringing in my ear
I hear her calling, calling
Calling me I hear
Radio future waves transmit
My future Mrs. President
And she... tries to tell me
Not ever too, its
Not ever too late
It's not ever too, its
Not ever too, its
Not ever too late
It's not ever too, ever too late
Through future forests in the sea
My future dog is walking me
I hear him calling
Calling...
From deep within the Thermoscene
Bikini snow burns like acetylene
Under our feet
It's not ever too, its
Not ever too, its
Not ever too late
It's not ever too, its
Not ever too, its
Not ever too late
It's not ever too, ever too late
The future dawning of the day
It's never here and never goes away
It's not ever too, its
Not ever too, its
Not ever too late
It's not ever too, its
Not ever too, its
Not ever too late
It's not ever too, ever too late
The lyrics of Darlingside’s “Futures” speak about, as the title implies, the future, in a somewhat dreamlike and surreal way. The song is open to interpretation, but there seems to be a sense of longing for something that is always elusive, which is the future. The lyrics start with “our future moment disappears,” which sounds as if it is referencing a specific moment that the singer was hoping for, but that now seems to be out of reach. The following line, “a future ringing in my ear,” adds to the sense of unattainable things, as if the future is something that is so close, yet so far away, that the singer can almost hear it, but never quite reach it.
The second verse continues this feeling of surrealist longing, with “future forests in the sea” and “my future dog is walking me”. These strange, evocative images of the future continue through the rest of the song, building on the sense that the future is a place that we can never quite grasp.
The chorus, with the repetition of “It’s not ever too, it’s not ever too late” adds a touch of hope to the song. Despite the sense of longing, there is a feeling that maybe, just maybe, the future is still possible. Overall, “Futures” is a beautiful, ethereal song about the impossibility of catching the future, but the hope that it is never entirely out of our grasp.
