Whippoorwill
Darlingside Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We call that old cabin the Whippoorwhill
Drawing up plans from wicker thrones
All of the best ideas they come from you
You let me find them on my own
And we parade them into every room
And when you leave I let them go

All my kingdom for a weekend
All our kingdoms slip away

Another draft in your apartment
Catch the smell of rust and pine
Mixing in winter coffee cansiters
Gin up a spell that stalls for time

All my kingdom for a weekend
All our kingdoms slip away

All of your favorite time it comes from me
So you put it on your calender
Try to save it in your phone

All my kingdom for a weekend
All our kingdom slip away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Darlingside's "Whippoorwill" present a nostalgic, melancholic reflection on a lost time and a lost connection with someone. The song's title refers to an old cabin, which presumably holds some sort of sentimental value to the singer and their companion. The cabin is a symbol of a simpler and happier time, when the two used to sit on "wicker thrones" and brainstorm ideas. The singer acknowledges that all the "best ideas" used to come from their companion, but they were allowed to discover them on their own. The two would then share their ideas with each other, and the new insights would be exhibited in every room of the cabin.

However, the song takes a somber turn when the companion leaves. The singer is left alone, and they have to let go of the ideas that they had created together. The lyrics "all my kingdom for a weekend, all our kingdoms slip away" indicate the regretful recognition that the closeness between the two has slipped away, and they are mourning the loss of it. In the second verse, the singer seems to be reminiscing on another moment in time, possibly a more recent memory, where they were with their companion, drafting something in an apartment. There is a sense of sensory detail in the lyrics, such as "the smell of rust and pine" and "winter coffee cansiters," that evoke a sense of coziness and familiarity. However, even in this memory, there is a certain bittersweetness, as they "gin up a spell that stalls for time."

In the final verse, the singer reflects on the fact that their companion seems to have less time for them now. The lines "all of your favorite times it comes from me, so you put it on your calendar, try to save it in your phone" suggest a longing for things to go back to the way they were. The song ends on the same note of melancholy and nostalgia, with the lyrics "all my kingdom for a weekend, all our kingdoms slip away" repeated again, as if to emphasize the poignancy of the loss.

Gang Of Four

Their vocal harmonies amaze me. The greatest since Crosby, Still and Nash.

They are out on tour here in 2022. I saw them last night in York PA with a female bass player and drummer who both sing, and Caitlin Canty opening, who joined them on several tunes. I too used to compare them to CSN, but last night put me more in mind of the Association. The harmonies were off the chart.
