Valerie
Darren Criss (ft. Naya Rivera) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well sometimes I go out by myself
And I look across the water
And I think of all the things,
What you're doing and in my head I paint a picture

'Cause since I've come on home, well my body's been a mess
And I've missed your ginger hair and the way you like to dress
Won't you come on over, stop making a fool out of me
Why won't you come on over Valerie, Valerie?

Did you have to go to jail,
Put your house on up for sale, did you get a good lawyer?
I hope you didn't catch a tan,
I hope you find the right man who'll fix it for you
Are you shopping anywhere,
Changed the color of your hair, are you busy?
And did you have to pay that fine
You were dodging all the time are you still dizzy?

'Cause since I've come on home, well my body's been a mess
And I've missed your ginger hair and the way you like to dress
Won't you come on over, stop making a fool out of me
Why don't you come on over Valerie, Valerie
Valerie, Valerie, Valerie, Valerie?

Well sometimes I go out by myself and I look across the water
And I think of all the things,
What you're doing and in my head I paint a picture

'Cause since I've come on home, well my body's been a mess
And I've missed your ginger hair and the way you like to dress
Won't you come on over, stop making a fool out of me
Why don't you come on over Valerie, Valerie?
Valerie, Valerie?

Oh Valerie, Valerie, Valerie, Valerie
Why don't you come on over Valerie?

Overall Meaning

The Darren Criss (ft. Naya Rivera) song "Valerie" is a cover of the song originally released by The Zutons. The lyrics are about a man who is longing for a woman he used to know named Valerie. He sings wistfully about how he thinks of her often and wonders what she's up to. He is clearly still in love with her, as evidenced by him missing her "ginger hair and the way [she] likes to dress." He implores her to come to him, to stop making a fool out of him, and to put an end to his "body's been a mess" since he's come home.

The lyrics themselves are straightforward, but the delivery by both Darren Criss and Naya Rivera gives the song a lot of depth and emotion. Their voices blend together perfectly, creating a duet that is both haunting and beautiful. The song has become a fan favorite and is widely regarded as one of the best cover songs of all time.

A part of what hurts the most is we'll never hear her voice again, her singing was severely underrated

I will miss her for my entire life. Naya was such an incredible person. Words cannot describe her. I didn’t know her personally, but I know that she was. She helped normalize LGBTQ+ TV couples. She was a mother. I cannot believe her son will have to grow up without her. He doesn’t deserve it. Naya didn’t deserve what happened to her. Why did she have to go? What did she do? The answer is- nothing. It’s so pointless. The world is now mourning her. I just can’t believe it. What has 2020 come too? I’ll tell you what it has. Naya’s body being found, on the anniversary of Cory’s death. I can’t even right now. I hate this year. It’s awful, but, out of all of it, today, July 13th, 2020, will go down, as the worst day ever for the glee community. I love you Naya, you will forever be in my heart ❤️
