Rich Girl
Daryl Hall Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're a rich girl, and you've gone too far
'Cause you know it don't matter anyway
You can rely on the old man's money
You can rely on the old man's money
It's a bitch girl but it's gone too far
'Cause you know it don't matter anyway
Say money, but it won't get you too far
Get you too far

And don't you know, don't you know
That it's wrong to take what is given you
So far gone, on your own
You could get along if you try to be strong
But you'll never be strong 'cause

You're a rich girl, and you've gone too far
'Cause you know it don't matter anyway
You can rely on the old man's money
You can rely on the old man's money
It's a bitch girl and it's gone too far
'Cause you know it don't matter anyway
Say money, but it won't get you too far
Get you too far

High and dry, out of the rain
It's so easy to hurt others when you can't feel pain
And don't you know that a love can't grow
'Cause there's too much to give, 'cause you'd rather live
For the thrill of it all, oh

You're a rich girl, and you've gone too far
'Cause you know it don't matter anyway
You can rely on the old man's money
You can rely on the old man's money
It's a bitch girl and it's gone too far
'Cause you know it don't matter anyway
Say money, but it won't get you too far
Say money, but it won't get you too far
Say money, but it won't get you too far
Get you too far

And you say
You can rely on the old man's money
You can rely on the old man's money
You're a rich girl, a rich girl

Oh, you're a rich, rich girl yeah
Say money, but it won't get you too far, oh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Daryl Hall's "Rich Girl" tell the story of a wealthy girl who relies on her father's money for everything. The song suggests that her wealth has made her spoiled and entitled, and that her material possessions won't bring her happiness or true love. The chorus repeats the phrase "you can rely on the old man's money," which is a direct reference to her dependency on her father's wealth. The song also explores the idea that this kind of materialism and wealth can be unfulfilling or even damaging to oneself and those around them.

The second verse highlights the challenges that come with trying to sustain a loving relationship when one partner has all the money and the other doesn't. The songwriter observes that it's difficult for love to grow when there's an imbalance of power or wealth. The final lines of the verse suggest that the thrill of material possessions and frivolous spending might be more important to the girl than finding true love or forming meaningful connections with others. Overall, the song suggests that being too focused on wealth and extravagance can have negative consequences in terms of one's own personal growth and relationships with others.

I remember as a kid in the 70s listening to this song and being shocked that they said the word "bitch".

@elrondhubbard7059

Society has desensitised itself to the concept of 'swear words', mostly, which is a good thing I think.
Like this song, the line 'It's a bitch, girl', it works so well. I'm not the kind of person who uses swear words at every possible moment, but they have their place like any other word, and this song proves it.
More than that, it doesn't even make sense to me, the concept of curse words. Like, take 'fuck' for instance, it means nearly everything but let's take its most provocative meaning which is to have sex. So 'fuck' means to have sex. Is 'sex' a swear word? No. So why is 'fuck' a swear word? Is it just because it sounds bad? Well by that rationale, the word 'duck' should be 75% as offensive as 'fuck'. But it isn't. So what's going on here? We've just decided certain words have magical powers of causing offence? It's on par with witchcraft trials, I think.
No, the word 'fuck' and 'shit' and all the others have their place in the English language. Like any word, an eloquent person wont overuse it, but these words have their time and place.
EDIT: Sorry for the thesis. Alcohol and comment sections are a funny mix.

@@elrondhubbard7059 Did you know the word fuck is an acronym? It was a decree. There was a kingdom and in the kingdom there was a lack in people and funding so the king ordered everyone to FUCK! Fornicate. Under. Command. of the King.

“It’s so easy to hurt others when you can’t feel pain” is such a universally true line that it almost hurts haha

@mirandawyatt77

My favorite line of the song. I always turn it up.

@braveheart4946

Welp, if you got to much pain, you finaly get invicibile to it, so you dont feel it anymore at the end. That's how you can understood pain, not psychical pain. From it you can avoid to hurt people becouse you already understood and you are able to understand all new factors which can put people in pain. So i disagree a little

@@braveheart4946 My guy I’m very sorry but I don’t understand what you are trying to say, because your sentence structure is more than confusing to me
