His latest album release From The Inside is forty-six minutes of tranquil, yet massively intense jazz; this album is fulminating with artistic invention. All of the tunes on the album are originals of Johnson's except for the standard "You Don't Know What Love is." The album begins with a smooth, hip-hop groove. Throughout the tune, the texture and mood stay subdued. While the feel may be calm, johnson's lines are not; they have a relaxed fierceness. At the close, the tune segues to the second composition. Full of off-beat punches, "The Wizard" is spellbinding. The groove changes to funk and johnson lays it down. Often times 5/4 can sound contrived and uneasy, but with amazing skills the trio performs in this meter comfortably and naturally. A great credit to Johnson's compositional skills, the melody to "The Temple" is genuinely in 5/4, contributing to the ease the song portrays. The next tune is a laid back waltz (in 6); the feel is swing. After Johnsons solo, bassist Lonnie Plaxico delivers a stellar performance. The tune then ends as calmly as it began. Johnson's last original is for full ensemble. In 6/4, the tune features a persistent bassline. It is quite different than anything that has preceded it. The album's compositions seem to gradually build to this tunes intensity and ambience, before receding for the last piece: a solo-piano rendition of the standard "You Don't Know What Love Is." Upon recently having the opportunity to hear Kenny Barron speak, one of the key points he stressed was the importance of good rhythm. He recalled a story of a drummer who would only bring his ride cymbal to jam sessions! He stated that because the drummer had such a great feeling in his ride cymbal, that none of the other musicians ever missed the other drums and cymbals. This kind of devotion to feel can make or brake jazz musicians. The album From The Inside proves that Daryl Johnson certainly has impeccable feel. I had a similar experience as a white male in New Zealand.

I was "jumped" in an alleyway as a kid, then robbed at gun point at a grave yard shift at a gas station. Finally I was kicked in the head at my latest employment...

All those experiences were done to me by people who looked different than me.

So I became obsessed with the perceived differences.

I discounted all those times white people had done wrong by me.

I forget where I first heard it, but the best quote I've heard regarding arguments versus debates is as follows:

"An argument is an attempt to force your opinion onto others, at the expense of denying their viewpoints as valid. A debate is a reasoned discussion between like minds of differing opinion."

To engage in an argument is to have already lost the intellectual discourse. By denying outside information, no matter how factual it may be, you are lessening your own intellectual capabilities.

But to have a true debate with somebody is to truly think about the world around you. It is to potentially enrich yourself by realizing that maybe you don't, in fact, have all the information, and it leaves you open to new ideas.

It's very heartbreaking. As someone with a wyt father and blk mother, I had to have the ugliness of racism explained to me when I was 5 years old... and I still didn't get it. I was too young to grasp the concept of hate in any meaningful capacity. It came after an incident with my parents in a small Texas town they both grew up in. My first experience of hate came from a blk guy that called my blk mother a bed we/nch for being married to my wyt father. I didn't understand that term, but somehow it made me feel sad and scared... and it upset my mother. I'd never seen my dad so furious to the point where he was ready to fight this guy. My mother stopped him and told him something that made him calm down. I don't know what it was or maybe I just don't remember. I do remember my mother crying later and both of them sitting me and my little brother down to explain as best they could. My baby brother didn't get it at all and was more interested in playing so they let him toddle off. Lol Even though I was a little older than him, I still didn't quite get it. I just remember how awful it made me feel. No child should have the ignorance and fear of adults slammed down onto them- not ever. Those tiny little shoulders aren't built to carry that kind of weight. It changed me and put a small blight on what had been the clean slate of my childhood. I'll always remember how bad I felt.

Nothing is more upsetting, aside from maybe institutional racism than children having to deal with racism at such a young age. I remember reading that studies show that children internalize the racism and hatred they see and it affects them in some really serious ways, like you said, it's too great a burden for such small shoulders.

All children that experience racism are taught it at a young age (if family are aware) I was taught what racism was i primary school, where I got bullied based on skin colour. Unfortunately, for a lot of us, its a thing that happens as a child, which then completely alters how you think from then on.

So, I say in our own day to day way..we share these videos, try to get them to organizations, news outlets..MLK Jr.'s day took forever to be recognized etc. We should ask ourselves how do we get acts and things like this out into the public, do not wait for that BIG prize (it may never come) though think of the neighborhood schools and organizations, oh, like the "boy scouts". I took a Psychology of Prejudice class in college and the thing that has always stuck with me was the fact that the only thing shown to lessen a person's prejudices against a certain group is to have a positive interaction with someone from that group. The effect is even greater if they succeed on a task together.

Sometimes making people stop and actually question their beliefs is enough. Alot of modern racisim is ignorance, not stupidity, they have never been forced to challenge the views instilled in them from their parents and grandparents, and sometimes simply asking questions is enough for them to realize the folly of their views and is enough to change them. Even if they dont change all the way it could be enough that their views dont pass to their children and the cycle ends with their generation.

In my personal experience you often ostracize yourself when you go down extremist paths since you lose some relatability to other normal people. But if someone talks to you like normal and gets common ground it’s much easier for you to stick to that since from what I know, all extremist spaces are much like abusive relationships, they’re not good, but better than nothing.

I think it's something that gets lost..idea subscriptions.. members of the kkk are just people. They don't go out and think today I'm gonna ruin x's life. They are afraid. We need more people like Daryl Davis in the world. He goes about fighting racism the right way - By targeting the ideology, rather than the people. Making them question their beliefs by forming a human connection with them, rather than just insulting them (which would just solidify their beliefs).
Props to Roger Kelly too. Walking away from an ideology you've been taught your whole life can't be easy, but in the end, he faced his demons and won.

@@noelsebz90 Learn about the klan from him. in his lecture he notes that being able to understand who you're talking to and what you're talking about is key. Being able to respect one another is important for dialogue, and through respectful dialogue we are able to become better people.

This video needs to be seen by A LOT of people in America today. I would love to hear Daryl Davis' take on the discourse and violence we are seeing in America right now. How people are, once again, treating others with distain without even being willing to talk to them. Granted the problems are more than merely race, but even so, more and more people engaging in violence without even listening to the other side.

I always come back to this talk, because it really applies not only to race, but other points of a person's identity. A main reason as to why things like racism and homophobia and transphobia continue to have prevalence in modern society is because of pre-conceived notions of someone else's character. How ignorance of one another can spark hatred and division. As stated within the talk, we as humans have a natural tendency to fear things to which we don't understand. We want to distance ourselves from it, or worse, destroy it by any means necessary.

We, as a collective, should take more steps towards understanding where the impetus of this hatred stems from. Not necessarily agreeing with the views people are making, but giving these other people an ear to listen on. People need not be so quick to shun those who may have a view that goes against our own, no matter the implications of said view. We should fight to break those pre-conceived notions and show people that we're willing to give others the time of day, because we're all the same species at the end of it all. In time, those people may change their minds on these topics, some may not. But those same people will thank you for letting them air out their opinions. So the next time you see a comment promoting anything like this, try not to yell at them. Start a conversation, and keep it going.

Davis is fabulous. The only thing I would question a little bit is his statement at the end that "anyone can do this." I think he has incredible strength. It's so touching how he changed the heart of the Klan Grand Dragon, who eventually left the Klan. I feel Davis was Christ for him. Sometimes we don't have the strength, and someone else is the example for us. The person who shows the way.

I love his statement that we have to keep talking. That means we are accepting the humanity of the other person, on the other side. Probably a big problem with CRT is that it makes it harder by putting people in categories. The Grand Dragon says near the end that he still believes in his categories, the categories he learned early in life. It is hard to change one's thinking very much after say, age 30. We build our lives around certain ways of thinking we adopt earlier. But Davis's patience paid off! He is my hero.

This man did what was comparable to an injured Gazelle walking in to a Lion's den and walking out with friends. I know that Lion's don't actually hate Gazelle's and this has more to do with hatred than nature but I mean the action of walking in to a place where you're in danger and walking out not only alive but with friends and changing their way of thinking, of breaking down countless years of hatred in a person. What an incredible man with more balls and more heart than I've ever seen anywhere. A truly inspirational person.
