Requiem
Das Ich Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Auf jedem Tisch zwei. Männer und Weiber
Kreuzweis. Nah, nackt, und dennoch ohne Qual
Den Schädel auf. Die Brust entzwei. Die Leiber
Gebären nun ihr allerletztes Mal

Jeder drei Näpfe voll: von Him bis Hoden
Und Gottes Tempel und des Teufels Stall
Nun Brust and Brust auf eines Kübels Boden
Begrinsen Golgatha und Sündenfall

Der Rest in Särge. Lauter Neugeburten:
Mannsbeine, Kindebrust un Haar vom Weib

Ich sah, von zweien, die dereinst sich hurten
Lag es da, wie aus einem Mutterleib

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Das Ich's song "Requiem" describe a scene of ultimate debauchery and pleasure, contrasted with images of death and decay. The opening lines set the stage for a disturbing tableau, with pairs of men and women lying naked on tables, their skulls cracked open and their bodies split apart. Despite their gruesome appearance, there is no sign of pain or suffering - on the contrary, the bodies seem to be enjoying themselves, grinning and cavorting together in a bizarre mockery of life and death.

The second stanza of the song is even more surreal, with lines that describe the participants consuming strange concoctions and mingling their bodily fluids together in a shared tub. At the same time, references to biblical stories like Golgotha and the fall from grace suggest a deeper theme of spiritual decay and corruption. The final lines of the song add a note of macabre horror, as the singer describes seeing the relics of past lovers lying side by side in a coffin as though they had just been born.

Overall, the lyrics of "Requiem" seem to be a meditation on the intersections of pleasure, pain, and death, as well as the ways in which people try to escape and transcend their own mortality. By juxtaposing images of raw physicality with religious and mythic symbols, Das Ich creates a surreal and unsettling portrait of human desire.
