If You Can
Dashboard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What you found sure upset you,
Never saw it coming did you?
It's easy to be surprised
With both your eyes sewn closed.

Handled with great precision,
Another faultless execution,
You're the subject of this exhibition,
A willing cadaver, a willing cadaver.

Scalpled, sutured, made whole again.

These cuts are leaving creases.
Trace the scars, to fit the pieces,
To tell your story, you don't need to say a word.

So call off the cavalry,
You can't save a wretch like me.
Clean this with kerosene,
If you can't leave it be, might as well make it bleed.

Scalpled, sutured, make whole again.

You're wires are frayed, can't fire right,
You look better when out of sight,
You were not made to stand and fight,
There's something better wrong with you.

You're pulse is anemic, you're tired of the fire,
You're bruising too easy, and falling behind,
And no one is waiting for you,
And no one is waiting for you.

So call off the quarantine,
You can't save the rest from me.
Clean this with kerosene,
If you can't leave it be might as well make it bleed.

Scalpled, sutured, made whole again.

You're wires are frayed, can't fire right,
You look better when out of sight,
You were not made to stand and fight,
There's something better wrong with you.

And no one is waiting for you.
And no one is waiting for you.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Dashboard Confessional's If You Can't Leave it Be appear to be about the emotional turmoil of someone who has been betrayed or hurt by someone else. The first verse depicts the shock that comes with finding out that someone you trusted has done something to hurt you. This revelation can be especially jarring if you've been blind to the warning signs, as the lyrics suggest: "It's easy to be surprised with both your eyes sewn closed."

In the second verse, the lyrics take on a more medicinal tone, comparing the process of healing from this hurt to that of surgery. The person has been "scalped" and "sutured" to patch up the damage that's been done. The idea of the person being a "willing cadaver" is an unsettling one, as it seems to suggest that they've given up on themselves and are allowing someone else to dictate their fate.

The chorus is a call to action, urging the listener to make a choice about how to move forward. If they can't leave the hurt behind, they might as well embrace it and let it "bleed." The third verse paints a grim picture of the person who's been hurt, depicting them as not just emotionally weakened, but physically too. They're too tired to fight back, too fragile to take on the world alone.

Ultimately, the song seems to be about the struggle to recover from a deep betrayal or hurt. The choice to embrace the pain and let it bleed might seem like a counterproductive one, but it's one that acknowledges the reality of the situation: if you can't leave it be, you have to find a way to live with it.

❤️❤️❤️ this but I don't own a laminator ☹️

@DebbieJsCraftingCorner

I totally get that. There are so many crafty things you can do with one, so I bought a Scotch Laminator for around $20 years ago. I currently use a Crenova Laminator (from amazon) that works so much better. Of course, now I want a Minc machine. I use a laminator mostly for foiling, and laminating storage dividers, and the Minc is awesome for foiling AND can be used to laminate too... but costs more. ( I have affiliate links available if your interested... and I think I still have my old Scotch Laminator. I should test it before I decide to sell it to make sure it still works) ~Big Hugs! I am curious as to why you put the card stocking and trim it then remove it. What was the purpose of it ?
