I just spent my first Christmas in Germany and it was very different from the US Christmas. Krampusnacht and Nikolaustag definitely threw me off when my host family gave me gifts. 😂

I'm from Alaska, and while we do of course celebrate Christmas, we don't really do much special or unique for it. For us Fur rendezvous (Fur Rondy) is a much larger winter celebration. It's a couple of weeks long, has a Fair (including at least one very cold ride), ice and snow sculptures, a drama, the Fur auction, the running of the reindeer, and the "start" of the Iditarod and a number of other things. That's what we tend to look forward to the most.

Hey Dave, just want to say I really like this video. Since my last name is Wunderlich and my mother was Norwegian extract I can only tell you that growing up I heard about knecht ruprecht. Most Americans never heard of Krampus until the movie came out a few years ago. My daughter was "Lady Krampus" for Halloween a few years ago. She did a great job on the costume. I wish I could show you her picture!

I am writing from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA and there are Native American communities here. There is always ceremonial dancing going on where at some point, bad children are caught and thrown in the river by koshare clowns. Whipping can happen as i was whipped with branches at a Yei bi chei ceremony in my tribe, Diné, or Navajo. Our cousins, the Apache have these Mountain Spirit dancers, formerly called Devil Dancers where children can be dragged away, say while watching the dancers dance in a parade.The faces of the dancers are behind a black hood with slits opened for the dancers to see through.

My mom is from Santa Fe and we are part Zuni. I haven't spent a lot of time on the reservation, but the closest thing to Krampus I can think of is the Suuke. It's a cave monster that carries off children in their baskets. It's not a holiday thing, though.

Firstly Krampus was the most distinctive part of German culture that I remember from my time in Germany. I remember going to school in North Rhine Westfalia including in the town that didn't exist. And even in the army schools we'd heard about Krampus. i even visit the school alongside Santa Claus several times while I was there. Secondly, as for Saint Nicolas one thing that sounds strange about Christianity is that Saint Nicolas is both a patron saint of children and prostitutes.

Krampus is a trans-Alpine creature, which is present in all cultures surrounding Alpine region (including Bavaria).

So you're not German American? It's okay if so but in the same time, I did grow a little curious about Krampus after hearing about him a little bit. I'm also curious to know what he does to misbehave children during Christmas time.
