Happy Organ
Dave 'Baby' Cortez Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The best things in life are free
But you can keep them for the birds and bees
Now give me money
That's what I want
That's what I want, yeah
That's what I want

You're lovin' gives me a thrill
But you're lovin' don't pay my bills
Now give me money
That's what I want
That's what I want, yeah
That's what I want

Money don't get everything it's true
What it don't get, I can't use
Now give me money
That's what I want
That's what I want, yeah
That's what I want, wah

Money don't get everything it's true
What it don't get, I can't use
Now give me money
That's what I want
That's what I want, yeah
That's what I want

Well now give me money
A lot of money
Wow, yeah, I wanna be free
Oh I want money
That's what I want
That's what I want, well
Now give me money
A lot of money
Wow, yeah, you need money
Now, give me money

That's what I want, yeah
That's what I want

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Dave 'Baby' Cortez's song The Happy Organ illustrate the basic human instinct to desire money and material possessions. The singer of the song begins by acknowledging that the best things in life are free, such as love, but dismisses them as being only valuable to birds and bees. He then declares that he wants money, which he believes is the key to happiness and freedom. The singer suggests that though love may give him a thrill, it cannot pay his bills. He again implores his listener to give him money, as it is what he truly wants.

In the second verse, the singer admits that although money may not buy everything, there are things that he cannot use without it. He repeats his refrain of "give me money" several times, emphasizing the urgency and importance of his request. At the end of the song, he concludes that he wants to be free, and that money is the key to achieving this freedom. Overall, the lyrics reflect a materialistic worldview, in which the accumulation of wealth is seen as the only path to happiness and fulfillment.

Skated to this tune at roller rinks in the early 60's. I can still feel the wind flying through my hair going around those corners. What fun!
