The War Is Over
Dave Lyrics

So this is Christmas
And what have you done?
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones
The old and the young
A very merry Christmas
And a happy new year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Christmas (war is over)
For weak and for strong (if you want it)
For the rich and the poor ones (war is over)
The road is so long (now)
And so happy Christmas (war is over)
For black and for white (if you want it)
For the left and for right ones (war is over)
Let's stop all the fight (now)
A very merry Christmas
And a happy new year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Christmas (war is over)
And what have we done? (If you want it)
Another year over (war is over)
And a new one just begun (now)
And so happy Christmas (war is over)
We hope you have fun (if you want it)
The near and the dear one (war is over)
The old and the young (now)
A very merry Christmas (a very merry Christmas)
And a happy new year (and a happy new year)
Let's hope it's a good one (let's hope it's a good one)
Without any fear

And so this is Christmas (war is over)
And what have we done? (If you want it)

Another year over (war is over)
And a new one just begun (now)

Overall Meaning

In the song "The Masquerade Is Over," Dave Carpenter sings about the end of a romantic relationship. He describes how the passion and excitement they once had for each other has faded away, leaving him feeling like they have been wearing masks in their relationship. He states that he believes that this masquerade is over and that so is their love. The lyrics also suggest that he is unwilling to face the harsh realities of their relationship and may soon resort to wearing a clown's disguise and laughing through his pain like Pagliacci, the famous Italian clown.

The first verse describes the diminished attraction between the couple. The thrills they once experienced when they kissed are gone, and the wistfulness in his tone suggests that it is too late for them to rekindle their romance. The second verse suggests that they have reached a point where their communication has become dull and unremarkable, and capturing each other's attention with words is no longer effective. The chorus reiterates that the masquerade, or their pretense of being in love, is over, and love itself is over.

In the last verse, the singer acknowledges that although his lover's appearance has not changed, he can no longer see the person he fell in love with. He can no longer hide from the truth that their relationship is over. The lyrics indicate that he may attempt to hide his true feelings behind a mask, using the example of Pagliacci, who put on a clown disguise to hide the pain he felt in his heart.

Overall, "The Masquerade Is Over" is a poignant song about the end of a relationship, how sometimes we put on masks in our relationships, and how the end of love can be painful and difficult to accept.
