Crying Game
Dave Berry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know all there is to know about the crying game
I've had my share of the crying game
First there are kisses (kisses), then there are sighs
And then before you know where you are
You're sayin' goodbye

One day soon I'm gonna tell the moon
About the crying game
And if he knows, maybe he'll explain
Why there are heartaches (heartaches), why there are tears
And what to do to stop feeling blue when love disappears

First there are kisses (kisses), then there are sighs
And then before you know where you are
You're sayin' goodbye

Don't want no more of the crying game
Don't want no more of the crying game

Overall Meaning

The Crying Game by Dave Berry is a song about the ups and downs of love. The lyrics suggest that the singer has experienced the pain and heartbreak of love and is now tired of it. The opening line "I know all there is to know about the crying game" suggests that the singer has gone through all the different stages of love, including the pain of a breakup. The chorus "Don't want no more of the crying game" shows the singer's desire to move on from this painful experience.

The lyrics describe the different stages of a relationship, starting with "kisses" and "sighs" and ending with saying goodbye. This sequence suggests that a relationship can start off strong and happy, but can quickly turn sour and end in heartbreak. The singer wants to understand why this happens and how to prevent it. The line "One day soon I'm gonna tell the moon" suggests that the singer is seeking guidance from a higher power, and hopes that the moon might provide answers.

Overall, The Crying Game is a song about the pain and confusion of love, and the desire to move on from it. It is a lament about the fickleness of relationships and the difficulty of finding lasting happiness.

I was 17 when this came out in the summer of 1964 and I loved it at once. Because of something that was happening to me at that time, I knew just what he was singing about and bought this Decca single the following day for 6/8d and still have it 54 years later at the age of 71. It still sounds as marvellous now as it did then. They don't make records like this these days. A real classic!
