Mother
Dave Bixby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She sang to me
When I was a little boy
On bended knee
All her love I would enjoy
But the years went by
I made her cry
It left her sad
To see me go bad

She wanted me
To have the better things
The songs she sang to me
No more she ever sings
And its sad
Oh mother dear how could I hurt you so

She tried to tell me
About Jesus and his love
I laughed at her
And said threes nothing up above
How little I did know
How much she loved me so
As the years went buy
She learned how not to cry

How can I tell her
Old prayers have all come true
She gave up hope so long ago
And fell out of tune

Oh Jesus tell her I'm not lying any more
And I want to love her again

Overall Meaning

Dave Bixby's song "Mother" is a heartbreaking ballad that reflects on the relationship between a mother and her son. The first stanza reveals their connection when the son was a little boy, and his mother would sing to him on bended knee. The lyrics illustrate how much love they shared at that time. However, as the years went by, the son made his mother cry with the direction he took in life. He abandoned the songs his mother sang to him and the better things she wanted for him. The son's careless actions deeply wounded his mother, and she hasn't sung to him since.

In the second stanza, the son reflects on his mother's attempt to introduce him to Jesus and his love. However, he laughed at her and rejected her faith. The son realizes too late how much his mother loved him and how little he knew. As the years went by, the mother learned not to cry and gave up hope that her son would ever find his way back to her. The song ends with the son asking Jesus to tell his mother that his old prayers have come true, and he wants to love her again.
