He was probably best known for "Take Five", written by saxophone player Paul Desmond, who was the saxophonist in The Dave Brubeck Quartet. Due to the immense popularity of his work, Brubeck had won multiple awards such as a lifetime achievement award from the Grammys in 1996, a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Fellowship in 1999, and a Kennedy Center Honor in 2009.

Brubeck's style ranged from refined to bombastic, reflecting his mother's attempts at classical training and his improvisational skills. Much of his music employed unusual time signatures, a fact jokingly referred to by his greatest hits album 'Time Signatures: A Career Retrospective'. Upon his death, a number of commentators noted his crossover appeal to mainstream pop audiences, something putting him in the company of other jazz legends such as Louis Armstrong and Herbie Hancock among others.

Two things about Dave's solo: @ 5:02 he starts playing fours against the rhythm section which is still in 3/4; which became a signature of his music for the rest of his life; also, just before he goes back to the original melody at the end, he quotes the song "You Make Me Feel So Young"--appropriate!

It says something of both the quality of the melody (one of Disney's finest) AND the artistry of ALL the musicians involved that Miles Davis (once, with BOTH Hank Mobley & the incomparable John Coltrane) and Dave Brubeck's Quartet (TWICE!) could make great recordings of this timeless tune.

This is as good as it gets. The solos are mind-bogglingly melodic jazz. Nice 3/4 time solid groove. No chaos at all. Brubeck’s piano is as inventive as are Desmond’s terrific solos.

Desmond as always great. Brubeck owes his success to this great alto sax, he was never a jazz pianist, he lacks swing, he was a great classical pianist. Immortal Desmond the best alto sax in all of jazz history.

At first I thought this was incorrect, but after looking it up, Norman Bates indeed played w Brubeck from 1956-57. I was familiar w Bob Bates, who happens to be Norman's brother, playing w Brubeck on the "Jazz: Red Hot and Cool" album, recorded in 1954-55.

It's crazy how this version came out before Miles Davis' version. I like both renditions for different reasons. Dave Brubeck's is light-hearted and bouncy, whereas Miles Davis' is slower, deeper, and poignant.

I looked for the sheet music for years, too. Just found it. Go on eBay and search "Jazz Piano Solos Volume 42". It's a new 96 page book of Brubeck solos, note for note, including this piece. I never would have figured out the first page -- great chords. I hope I can reach them all, Brubeck had big mitts (his words). The book is about $15. Enjoy !
