Funny Face
Dave Davies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In a world devoid of love
Where war is peace, hate eats the heart
Toxic bodies, polluted brains
Mind diseased, deceived with lies and shame
Enrage, in rage
Who are the culprits, who's to blame?
So much fear drives you insane
No more chains, no more chains
Fractured minds (fractured minds)
Why look at me with that hateful stare?
Can you not see beyond the mask
Time is stealing your sacred gift, your sacred past
(There's no two ways about it)
Do not kill me with your fractured mind
Do not fear me with the fractured mind
I know it's hard with fractured minds
So you run, so you hide
(Chant)
Look in the mirror, what can you see
Empty and shallow, but it's not me
It's gotta be something, that makes me sick
In my mind, in my heart, in my soul
Tearing me apart, I can't face it
'Cause I'm weak, 'cause I'm weak
Sad the mirror, eyes my soul
Perfect reflection, the ego holds
Clouds our vision, drains our blood
Destroys the sacred, fragments us all
We lie in tatters, the mirror speaks
To the enchanter who smiles and weeps
I am the shadow
Can you help me?
Look at me, damn you
Look at me, damn you
Look at me, damn you!

Love's the secret, love's not blind
It heals the body, it purifies the toxic mind

Overall Meaning

The song "Funny Face" was written by Dave Davies, the lead guitarist and founding member of the British rock band The Kinks. The lyrics talk about a world that is devoid of love and filled with hate, fear, and deception. Davies criticizes the culprits responsible for this state of affairs and urges people to look beyond the mask they wear and see the truth. He encourages listeners not to let their minds become fractured and polluted with lies and hate, but instead to embrace love, which can heal the body and purify the mind.

Davies delivers these powerful messages with a passionate and urgent vocal performance, enhanced by the driving rock instrumentation. The repetitive chanting in the chorus adds to the intensity of the song and reinforces the message that love is the key to healing and salvation.

One interesting fact about the song is that it was released as a single in 1983 and reached No. 67 on the UK singles chart. The song also appears on Davies' solo album "Chosen People" released in the same year. "Funny Face" is one of Davies' most popular solo tracks and continues to resonate with listeners today.

Another fact about the song is that it marks a departure from the trademark Kinks sound and displays Davies' creative range and versatility as a songwriter and musician. Funny Face features a more modern and edgier sound that reflects Davies' interest in punk and new wave influences from the late 70s and early 80s.

Overall, "Funny Face" is a powerful and thought-provoking song that urges listeners to confront the realities of a world that seems to be going astray and to find hope and healing through love.

Chords: Unfortunately, the chords are not available as the song has not been transcribed yet.

You're walking 'round in my memory
That only gets stronger and stronger
Smudged mascara and pill-shaped eyes
Everything you want was bought with lies.

But what can I do about it
The say you won't last any longer
All the gates of love you won't walk through
The only gates you see are colored blue.

I see you peering through frosted windows
Eyes don't smile, all they do is cry
Funny Face, she's all right
Funny Face, she's all right
Funny Face, she's all right

Oh how can I live without her
The doctors won't let me see her
But I can catch a glimpse through the doorway
Of the girl that I love and care for

I see you peering through frosted windows
Eyes don't smile, all they do is cry
Funny Face, she's all right
Funny Face, she's all right
Funny Face, she's all right

I was 17 in 1967 and I played this album everyday- still love it at age 73 today!

@MindFlowersDotNet

I love Dave's songs.
In his lyrics I feel more intimate biography.
For someone to be able to bring pain and loss across in a song like Dave is rare.

@CarmieSchulz

You mean you've fell in love in a mental institution? That's what this song is about.

Hmmm....I like how The Kinks composed the bridges of this song. The quiet, oddly etheral nature of the bridges contrast with the rest of the song, and they sound like a precursor to indie pop in a way. It's easy to see where bands like Yo La Tengo & Belle and Sebastian got their sound from, after listening to this song.

@acidfilth2007

great observation very concise and effective description

@celiliorodriguezcortes950

Belle & Sebastian took many elements by The Kinks and the Ivy League.

@beepst

Could this band be more underrated?

@billytrap9404

Chandler, is that you?

@iLL-iNNeR-GrOoVe

Most underrated in the states due to broadcast ban throughout the 60s.

You don't punch the elite.
