Royals
Dave Days Lyrics

"Royals"

I've never seen a diamond in the flesh
I cut my teeth on wedding rings in the movies
And I'm not proud of my address,
In a torn-up town, no postcode envy

But every song's like gold teeth, grey goose, trippin' in the bathroom
Blood stains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room,
We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams.
But everybody's like Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece.
Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash.
We don't care, we aren't caught up in your love affair.

And we'll never be royals (royals).
It don't run in our blood,
That kind of luxe just ain't for us.
We crave a different kind of buzz.
Let me be your ruler (ruler),
You can call me queen Bee
And baby I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule.
Let me live that fantasy.

My friends and I—we've cracked the code.
We count our dollars on the train to the party.
And everyone who knows us knows that we're fine with this,
We didn't come from money.

But every song's like gold teeth, grey goose, trippin' in the bathroom.
Blood stains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room,
We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams.
But everybody's like Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece.
Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash
We don't care, we aren't caught up in your love affair

And we'll never be royals (royals).
It don't run in our blood
That kind of luxe just ain't for us.
We crave a different kind of buzz.
Let me be your ruler (ruler),
You can call me queen Bee
And baby I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule.
Let me live that fantasy.

Ooh ooh oh
We're bigger than we ever dreamed,
And I'm in love with being queen.
Ooh ooh oh
Life is great without a care
We aren't caught up in your love affair.

And we'll never be royals (royals).
It don't run in our blood
That kind of luxe just ain't for us.
We crave a different kind of buzz
Let me be your ruler (ruler),
You can call me queen Bee

And baby I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule.
Let me live that fantasy

Overall Meaning

The song Royals by Dave Days is about someone who comes from a lower socio-economic background and looks at the extravagant life of wealth, luxury, and fame that is presented in the media. The first verse, "I've never seen a diamond in the flesh, I cut my teeth on wedding rings in the movies, And I'm not proud of my address, In a torn-up town, no postcode envy," indicates that the singer is not accustomed to a life filled with fancy jewels and extravagance. The second verse, "But every song's like gold teeth, grey goose, trippin' in the bathroom, Blood stains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room, We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams," contrasts the lifestyle of the singer with that of the wealthy and famous. The singer acknowledges that their life is not as glamorous and that they don't aspire to have the wealth that the famous and the wealthy possess.

The chorus, "And we'll never be royals (royals), It don't run in our blood, That kind of luxe just ain't for us, We crave a different kind of buzz. Let me be your ruler (ruler), You can call me queen Bee, and baby I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule. Let me live that fantasy," emphasizes that the singer doesn't want or need the luxuries that come with being a part of the upper class. Instead, they desire a different kind of thrill, one that can't be purchased with wealth, and that the upper class can't fulfill.

The bridge, "Ooh ooh oh, We're bigger than we ever dreamed, And I'm in love with being queen. Ooh ooh oh, Life is great without a care, We aren't caught up in your love affair," signifies that the singer and their friends have built their success from their hard work, creativity, and the quality of their music. They have a sense of pride in what they've accomplished without being caught up in the love affairs and drama that often come with wealth and fame.

I love this version better than the original (I love Lorde).

You are my favourite YouTube artist and I have watched your clips on YouTube for years. When I saw you had songs on iTunes I spent all my money buying them. You have such an amazing talent and the other people you feature in the clips. You may not even read this but I just wanted to finally write something instead of being a silent subscriber and liker to all your music. You are an inspiring person - you encourage me to do more and to never stop doing what I love. On behalf of your followers and myself, I'd like to thank you for doing what you, you are my inspiration and many others. It's just truly amazing and you don't even really get acknowledged enough for what you do. So thank you Dave, thank you so much.

When I go to America in the January holidays in 2015 (I live in Australia), I will hope to see some of the places in your video clips (I also wish to see you but I don't think that's really possible myself).

The following songs I have suggested are because of the timbre of your voice - I think these would really suit your voice and its range. I know all this because I am currently doing Music at my high school. Here are the suggestions:
- "Hallelujah" (Jeff Buckley or SafetySuit)
- "Never Stop" (SafetySuit)
- "Let Go" (SafetySuit)
- "Cancer" (My Chemical Romance)
- "Teenagers" (My Chemical Romance)
- "Carousel" (Blink-182) - "Break Your Little Heart" (All Time Low)
- "Grand Theft Autumn" (Fall Out Boy)
- "You And Me" (Lifehouse)
- "Everything (Lifehouse)
- "What I've Done" (Linkin Park)
- "Something Beautiful" (NEEDTOBREATHE)
- "Face Down" (The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus)
- "Your Guardian Angel" (The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus)
- "Gone Away" (SafetySuit)
- "Gone Too Soon" (Simple Plan)

I actually hope you spent some of your time to read all this and feel touched that someone went to all this to write so much to express their thanks for you doing what you naturally do everyday - being you and singing. Thank you DaveDays.
I wish you would reply to this - but that's probably something that isn't possible.
YOU ARE AMAZING.
