Mr. President
Dave Dee / Dozy / Beaky / Mick / Titch Lyrics

1970

When I grow up to be a man
I won't lie for you
I won't die for you
'Cause I think you're wrong
Mister president
You've got to get
Yourself together
You ask me
If I'll be your friend
I can't tell you right now
I might be making a vow
And I could be wrong
I've got to get
Myself together
Du du du

When I grow up to be a man
I won't lie for you
I won't die for you
'Cause I think you're wrong
Mister president

You've got to get
Yourself together

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick & Tich's song Mr. President are a poignant commentary on ethical behavior and accountability. The opening lines, "When I grow up to be a man/I won't lie for you/I won't die for you/Cause I think you're wrong," serve as a rejection of blind loyalty to authority figures. The singer resists the pressure to blindly follow and defend a leader they believe to be in the wrong.

The song's title, "Mr. President," adds a layer of political significance to the lyrics. The singer addresses the leader of their country directly, urging them to "get/yourself together." The call to action is a reminder that those in power have a responsibility to lead with integrity and to put the interests of the people they serve above their own personal gain.

Overall, the lyrics of "Mr. President" encourage critical thinking and personal responsibility. They emphasize the importance of questioning authority and holding those in power accountable.

This was played to death on Radio Luxembourg in 1970 but still wasn't a very big hit - very Crosby Stills and Nash!
