Mr. President
Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I grow up to be a man
I won't lie for you
I won't die for you
'Cause I think you're wrong
Mister president
You've got to get
Yourself together
You ask me
If I'll be your friend
I can't tell you right now
I might be making a vow
And I could be wrong
I've got to get
Myself together
Du du du

When I grow up to be a man
I won't lie for you
I won't die for you
'Cause I think you're wrong
Mister president

You've got to get
Yourself together

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mr President by Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick & Tich are a powerful call to action against the political establishment. The song is a direct address to the titular President, telling him that the singer refuses to die or lie for him, because he believes that the President is wrong. The opening lines of the song set up the theme of separation and independence, with the singer declaring that when he grows up to be a man, he will not blindly follow the President. The repeated line of "you've got to get yourself together" is a clear demand for the President to improve his leadership and decision-making.

The singer's refusal to pledge his loyalty to the President is an act of rebellion against the status quo. Rather than succumbing to the pressures of society to blindly follow those in power, the singer chooses to think for himself and stand up for what he believes in. This sentiment is especially powerful when considering the context in which the song was released, during a time of immense political turmoil in the world.

Overall, Mr President is a thought-provoking critique of those in power and a call to action for individuals to reject blind allegiance and stand up for what they believe in.

This was played to death on Radio Luxembourg in 1970 but still wasn't a very big hit - very Crosby Stills and Nash!
