Crawling From The Wreckage
Dave Edmunds Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Got out really early from the factory,
Driving like a nut in the rain.
Don't think I was acting so hysterically,
But I didn't see a thing until it came.
Man, the drunks were verbal in the takeaway
Beating up the Chinee at the counter.
I put a few inside me at the end of the day.
I took out my revenge on the revolution counter.

Crawling from the wreckage,
Crawling from the wreckage.
You'd think by now at least that half a brain would get the message
Crawling from the wreckage,
Crawling from the wreckage,
Into a brand new car.

In walks Bud with his exploding nose.
He'd been giving it maximum today.
He shouted "How the devil? You in trouble I suppose?
But all you ever do is run away."
Gunned up the motor inta hyperdrive.
I wasn't gonna take any of that.
Don't get bright ideas about a suicide,
'Cause all I ever hear is zoom bam bam past me.

Crawling from the wreckage,
Crawling from the wreckage.
You'd think by now at least that half a brain would get the message.
Crawling from the wreckage,
Crawling from the wreckage,
Into a brand new car.

Crawling, crawling, crawling from the wreckage
Crawling, crawling, crawling from the wreckage
Crawling, crawling, crawling from the wreckage

Crawling from the wreckage,
Crawling from the wreckage.
Bits of me are scattered in the trees and in the hedges
Crawling from the wreckage,
Crawling from the wreckage,
Into a brand new car.

Nothing seem to happen that ain't happened before
I see it all through flashes of depression.
I drop my drink and hit some people running for the door.
Gotta make some kind of impression.
'Cause when I'm disconnected from the driving wheel,
I'm only half the man I should be.
But metal hitting metal is all I feel,
And everything is good as it possibly could be.

Crawling from the wreckage, crawling from the wreckage
You'd think by now at least that half my brain would get the message
Crawling from the wreckage, crawling from the wreckage
Into a brand new car

Crawling from the wreckage, crawling from the wreckage
Bits of me are scattered in the trees and on the hedges
Crawling from the wreckage, crawling from the wreckage
Into a brand new car

Crawling from the wreckage,
Crawling from the wreckage

Overall Meaning

The song "Crawling From the Wreckage" by Dave Edmunds is a powerful depiction of a man who feels disconnected from his life and is desperately seeking to escape from it. The lyrics describe a man who leaves work early and drives recklessly in the rain before encountering a scene of violence at a takeout restaurant. The singer then drinks to dull his emotions and engages in destructive behavior, eventually ending up in a car accident. Despite everything, he continues to crawl from the wreckage and fight to start anew.

The repeated chorus of "Crawling from the wreckage" represents the singer's struggle to move forward from his traumatic experiences. The use of automotive imagery ties the song's themes together and serves as a metaphor for the singer's desire to gain control over his life once more. The song's message ultimately seems to be one of resilience - no matter how many times he crashes and burns, the singer continues to press on and rebuild his life piece by piece.

Overall, "Crawling From the Wreckage" is a poignant and universal song that speaks to the human experience of overcoming adversity and starting anew.

@HybridphotoPro

This is one of my fave '80's songs but did you ever read the lyrics? OMGoodness they are bizarre and a bit dark for a fun uptempo song that most folks sing along to: "Crawling from the wreckage. Bits of me are scattered in the trees and on the hedges". haha I still love all Dave Edmunds work.

@ol.grumpy.bastard

This song neatly sums up ~45 years of my dating history.  You'd think by now at least  half my brain would get the message.

Nope...  🙃

@seancallahan1312

Great comment. Same with (I had to count) 43 years of girl-chasing for me. I was 13 when it got real. I have settled down these last 7 years. Never married yet. Fucking surfers, right? lol. I always think of this song when I'm waking up with a hangover and trying to drag myself out of bed.

@JC-gw3yo

I feel your pain...
