Auld Lang Syne
Dave Francis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And days of auld lang syne?
And days of auld lang syne, my dear,
And days of auld lang syne.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And days of auld lang syne?

We twa hae run aboot the braes
And pu'd the gowans fine.
We've wandered mony a weary foot,
Sin' auld lang syne.
Sin' auld lang syne, my dear,
Sin' auld lang syne,
We've wandered mony a weary foot,
Sin' auld ang syne.

We twa hae sported i' the burn,
From morning sun till dine,
But seas between us braid hae roared
Sin' auld lang syne.

Sin' auld lang syne, my dear,
Sin' auld lang syne.
But seas between us braid hae roared
Sin' auld lang syne.

And ther's a hand, my trusty friend,
And gie's a hand o' thine;
We'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,

We'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

Overall Meaning

The song "Auld Lang Syne" is a Scottish poem that translates to "old long since" in English, with the phrase referring to times gone by. As the song begins, the question is asked, "Should auld acquaintance be forgot/And never brought to mind?", prompting the listener to reflect on the value of remembering old friendships and memories. The chorus repeats the phrase "auld lang syne," referencing the idea of reminiscing about times gone by. The second verse continues this theme, with the singer recalling memories of running through the hills and picking flowers with a dear friend.

The third verse introduces the idea of distance separating friends, with the line "But seas between us braid hae roared/Sin' auld lang syne." Despite the physical distance, the singer acknowledges the enduring friendship, as expressed in the final verse: "And there's a hand, my trusty friend/And gie's a hand o' thine." The song ends with a toast to "tak' a cup o' kindness yet/For auld lang syne," reflecting a desire to raise a glass in honor of friendships past and present.

Overall, the lyrics of "Auld Lang Syne" encourage listeners to reflect on the importance of old friendships and memories, and to value the enduring connections that can persist despite the passage of time and distance.

Love the song... Music has no boundaries... This song was so heartfelt that it touched the heart of a Bengali poet (Tagore) and he recreated the same song in his mother tongue...

I remember being in tears when carrie said to miranda "you are not alone..." with this song in the background..I personally think it was one of the best scenes in the movie.! Loved it..

I totally cried at this part of the movie too! This version of the song is so beautiful and it is a very emotional moment in the film. God I love Sex and the City!!!

If I am not mistaken, the version we know is the one his publisher chose for it. This tune is the one Burns wanted. Burns was right. This is absolutely one of the most beautiful songs ever written...and made so doubly because of the music. I first heard it when this duo sang it for Sean Connery on the Kennedy Center Honors. There is a guy who also sings it here on YouTube who did a marvelous job of it too...of course, he was singing out of his house but that made it all the more effective.
