Pieces Of April
Dave Loggins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

April gave us springtime and the promise of the flowers
And the feeling that we both shared and the love that we called ours
We knew no time for sadness, that's a road we each had crossed
We were living a time meant for us, and even when it would rain
we would laugh it off.

I've got pieces of April, I keep them in a memory bouquet
I've got pieces of April, it's a morning in May

We stood on the crest of summer, beneath an oak that blossomed green
Feeling as I did in April, not really knowing what it means
But it must be then that you stand beside me now to make me feel this way
Just as I did in April, but it's a morning in May.

I've got pieces of April, I keep them in a memory bouquet
I've got pieces of April, but it's a morning in May

I've got pieces of April, I keep them in a memory bouquet
I've got pieces of April, but it's a morning in May

Overall Meaning

"Pieces of April" is a song by American country music singer-songwriter Dave Loggins released in 1972. The song tells the story of a couple who spent a lovely time together during the spring month of April. They shared their love with one another and knew no time for sadness. They laughed off the rain and were living in this blissful moment. The singer references that he has kept memories of April in a memory bouquet, like a bunch of flowers. When the summer came, they stood under an oak tree that blossomed green, feeling like they did in April. This moment awoke a feeling of longing for his lover, who is not with him anymore, but somehow he still feels close.

The singer still remembers the happiness of the time they spent together and has kept those memories close to him. He realizes that the months have gone by, and it's now May, which signifies that time has passed, but he still misses the moments he spent with his lover. The pieces of April are the memories of their love that he kept, just as a bouquet of memorable flowers. The song's bittersweet and nostalgic tone conveyed the message that the memories of loved ones can stay with us even when they are not physically present, and we can cherish them.

I was in high school when Three Dog Night's version came out and had never heard Dave Loggins' until today. It's always been one of my favorite songs but it has a very special meaning now. I lost my dad to dementia last week and today, this morning in May, is his funeral. I woke up at 5:30am thinking of this song. I will always have those pieces of April of dad and me. RIP Daddy.
