Anything Goes
Dave Madden Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Times have changed,
And we've ofter rewound the clock
Since the puritans got a shock
When they landed on Plymouth rock
If today any shock they might try to stem
'Stead of landing of Plymouth rock
Plymouth rock would land on them.
In olden days a glimpse of stocking
Was looked on as something shocking
But now God knows
Anything goes

Good authors to
Who once knew better words
Now only use four letter words
Writing prose
Anything goes

If driving fast cars you like
If low bars you like
If old hymns you like
If bare limbs you like
If Mae West you like
Or me undressed you like
Why nobody will oppose

When every night
The set thats smart
Is intruding on nudist parties
In studios
Anything goes

When Mrs. Ned McClean God bless her
Can get Russian reds to yes her
Than I suppose
Anything goes

When Rockafeller still can hoard
Enough money to let Max Gordon
Produce his shows
Anything goes

The world has gone mad today
And good's bad today
And black's white today
And days night today
And that gent today
You gave a cent today
Once owned several chateaux

When folks
Who still can ride in Jitney's
Find out Vanderbilts and Whitney's
Lack baby clo'es
Anything goes

When Sam Goldwyn
Can with great conviction
Instruct Anna Sten in diction
Than Anna shows
Anything goes

When you hear that
Lady Mendl standing up
Now turns a handspring landing up
On her toes
Anything goes

Just think of those shocks you've got
And those knocks you've got
And those blues you've got
From those news you've got
And those pains you've got
(if any brains you've got)
From those little radios

So Mrs. R.
With all her trimmin's
Can broadcast a bed from Simmon's

Cause Franklin knows
Anything goes

Overall Meaning

The song "Anything Goes" by Dave Madden is a commentary on the changing morality and social norms of America during the early 20th century. The song opens with an allusion to the landing of Plymouth Rock and how times have changed since then. Madden then goes on to describe how even basic things like what is considered shocking or taboo have changed. The song lists various things that were once considered risqué, such as glimpses of stocking, but are now deemed acceptable. The lyrics also poke fun at the changing language of literature, where four-letter words have become acceptable in writing.

The song goes on to describe how even high society has become more accepting of things that were once considered outlandish. The wealthy now attend nudist parties, and Mrs. Ned McClean, a socialite of the time, can convince the government to allow her to import Russian reds, which were communist propaganda. The rich are also shown to be eccentric, with people like Sam Goldwyn teaching Anna Sten diction.

Despite all the changes, Madden makes it clear that anything is still possible in this new society. Mrs. R can even broadcast a bed from Simmons, a mattress company, with the help of Franklin (presumably a reference to Franklin D. Roosevelt). The song is a celebration of individual freedom and a commentary on the moral vacuum of the time where anything goes.

Hey I’m the one who called in from Yonkers, 👋🏾 I want to expand on my call:

Toby was the one who was driving while jade was high in the back seat. Toby would’ve had to seen the tree therefore turning around, then starting the loop, or representing a “end point” ..but he was high too (we know is the reason the crash happened) if Toby would’ve seen that tree he would’ve surly crashed into it. They were on their way TO crashing into the tree BUT the accident with the RV happened.

Which leads to my own theory about Jade. Maybe he and Toby were met to die by hitting the tree, And the alienmonsterzombies were met to eat Them. Or maybe “play” with them while they’re trying to run into town/hide, while at the same time high on drugs. It’s a game to these creatures as well as a meal.

Did the crash with the RV change Jades fate and that’s why he’s able to have these visions? why Toby had to die?..🤷🏽‍♀️

🙏🏾

THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON ON THE BUS: I believe that the old man smiling in the polaroid photo is going to be a passenger on the bus that arrived at the diner. The black book that he's holding in the photo is the same black book that Jade found the photo in - the photo was in between 2 pages that had the circular symbol written over them. The old man drew those symbols in the book.

The photo has a "touristy" feel to it. It looks just like a photo one would take as soon as you step off a bus once you reach your final destination after traveling on a bus for hours. Once you step of the bus, right before you walk into a small town diner...

Also, the old man saw the same symbol as Jade did. How else is the old man similar to Jade? He's similar to Jade because the vehicle he was in (the bus) never got caught in the loop.

The bus never got caught in the loop because the townsfolk would have seen the bus circling the town for hours. The road is too narrow for the bus to do a 3-point turn, back up, and drive in the opposite direction; and there's a deep ravine on the side of the road that the bus driver must avoid and be cautious of.

When we looked at the photo, we focused on the background where we saw Victor as a little boy. When we focused on the bus, our minds went immediately to Kristi's girlfriend. A classic case of the writers using intended misdirection.

SHE'S JUST NOT THAT INTO KENNY: Kristi made a vital mistake with Kenny. So, to cover up her mistake, she decided to give in to his romantic advances - hoping to keep him so distracted that she can steer the narrative away from the crucial mistake she made. She doesn't want to be Kenny's girlfriend. She's not falling in love with Kenny. She's using Kenny's love of her as a way to cover-up the glaring mistake she made.

What mistake did Kristi make? In episode 10, when she and Kenny were in the ambulance talking, she told Kenny that she never made it out of Grand Rapids, MI. If she never made it out of Grand Rapids, MI, how did she see the tree and get caught in the loop? Grand Rapids is only 45 square miles in area. So how did she drive far enough to get into the loop?

Most of the people in "From" were driving for an extended period of time; some were even going on cross-country trips. So, how did Kristi see the fallen tree in the road in Grand Rapids if she's from Grand Rapids? From what we've learned, the people have been driving for a while before seeing the tree.

Let's get this straight. While driving to the neighborhood Walmart, she saw the fallen tree and got caught in the loop? On the way to the post office that's around the corner she got caught in the loop? On the way to work, she decided to fill her car up with gas, but she saw the fallen tree in the road? Hmmm...

Kristi is the only person who encountered the fallen tree in the road in the city of his/her residence. Either's she's lying about where she's from. Or, she's lying about where she encountered the tree. Or, for some unknown reason, her encounter with the fallen tree is totally different than everyone else's encounter.

To cover up the mistake of sharing too much of her personal information with Kenny, she decided to give Kenny what he wanted - a romantic and physical relationship. I guess she thinks that she can keep him preoccupied with love, so that he won't start putting the pieces together. "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."

I guess if you have that mindset, than trickery and chicanery should work on someone so lovestruck & sentimental like Kenny; but, Kristi didn't plan on her girlfriend showing up. Kristi's girlfriend can put holes in Kristi's backstory, to the point that Kenny will figure out that Kristi isn't who she's pretending to be.

It's a love triangle - but a love triangle with a big twist. If Kristi is a mole or some sort of malevolent entity planted in the town, Kenny may have to kill the woman he loves - similar to when Boyd was forced to kill Abby.

Jade never encountered the fallen tree nor got stuck in the loop. Now that Toby is dead, Jade is the only one in town (that we know of) who never saw the tree or got stuck in the loop. Although he bypassed the tree and the loop, he still got into the town.

He's the only one in town who wasn't selected or picked to be in the town. His residence in the town is a mistake - a "glitch".

Which means he should be able to employ some "reverse engineering" to get out of the town. He should be able to bypass the tree and the loop, get on that road and drive out of the town.

He's the only one who right now can drive out of the town; but, he doesn't know it.

I also think that he's impervious to the monster attacks, since he never got caught in the loop. But how would he safely test this hypothesis?

Angela E

@Nya T By "town", I mean the entire place - the entire location where all of them are stuck in, whether they live in Colony House or not
.
I should have been clearer in my writing.

So when I say that he wasn't picked by the town, I mean that the entity that controls the place selects specific people in certain types of vehicles to get stuck in the loop. For example, the entity never selects motorcyclists to see the fallen tree because a motorcyclist could step over the tree and carry/drag the motorcycle over the tree. People driving construction trucks don't get selected by the entity because they could use their construction trucks to move the tree. Loggers or tree trimmers with chain saws in their trucks don't get selected, because they could cut the tree. You never see a pedestrian/hitchhiker/hobo, someone whose car stalled or ran out of gas, or someone living "off the grid" encountering the fallen tree because they would simply step over the tree.

The entity selected the Matthew's family, but the entity hadn't planned for the crash to happen. Jade and Toby never saw the tree or got caught in the loop.. They weren't supposed to be a part of what's happening. Jade wasn't selected by the entity to be a part of whatever is going on at that geographical location. His presence there is a mistake.

Whenever there is a glitch in the system, game, or experiment, the entity has to reset or adjust the program. That's why Victor freaked out about the crash. It happened once before, a long time ago; and, there were bad consequences.

@Angela E One thing I feel she def knew they meant THAT boy Ethen I don't think its possible they could have meant the boy in white, I do think Ethen is the bigger threat because
He is the one that seems to have a child like understanding that does not allow preconceived notions that get in the way of seeing the truth or the way

Also I would say its not that the voices don't want the other dead, But was stopped by the 2nd death by circumstances, Also there is the opportunity they the voices, Seem to have understanding on what opportunities would be available, If Jade for instance was in the bed instead of Toby then I think jade would have been the dead one instead Possibly but maybe not,

I feel there is a 2 opposing power thing going on, Though this does not mean that either power has the best interest of the people in mind.

I also think there is something going on with the symbol that Jade is chasing down I seen a drawing in the cave underground seems a group worshiping that symbol, Maybe this has something to do with how the people turn into the monsters.

I think we may be surprised on who turns out to be good and who is bad

Seems like in the drawings there is a lot of drawing showing a group on one side of things and 2 people on the other, See the 2 people a lot, This may happen by the end

Angela E

@Victor Critelli

There wouldn't be a show if there was no loop. That's the premise of the entire show - they are stuck in a dangerous town that they can't escape from.

If they weren't stuck there, they could drive out of there in the morning, without worrying about the monsters. They wouldn't be stuck there. That's why Boyd & Sarah had to go on foot, and carry a talisman.

Actually, yes it was said in multiple episodes and by various characters that people drive around in the loop for a long time after they see the tree and decide to drive in the opposite direction to avoid the tree. Because you can't escape the loop once you see the tree. In episode 9 or 10, Ellis reminds Fatima how she kept driving around the town.

Boyd and Kenny started using the nail strip to prevent people from driving around aimlessly for hours into the dangerous night, which would put the car's occupants at risk to be killed by the monsters if the nail strip wasn't used. So, you may need to re-watch some episodes. Somehow the town chooses which vehicles it wants to see the tree. Otherwise, the town would be huge.

Prior to the arrival of the bus,, every person in the town saw the fallen tree and got caught in the loop, except for Jade and Toby. They crashed into the Matthew's RV before they could even encounter the fallen tree.

It was like a force (either bad or good) placed the bus there. It's too convenient for the bus to arrive right after the radio communication, approaching nighttime, with a storm coming, and the town nearly empty.

Victor Critelli

@Angela E No one said its required to go around in a loop and pass the town a few times many did because its the natural thing to do in their situation

Also what is the natural thing to do the bus is stuck by the tree right,They probably didn't move from the tree right away until after hours and no signal decided there is no other thing to do

people are maybe hungry tired and want to go The driver if he is worth anything would probably eventually start driving backward slowly, Until the was enough space to turn around NO? That's what I would do, Eventually you will find flat enough ground to turn around

Also I don't think there are any other cars around the 2 cars was the first time in a very long time when Jim and co came, Still with no signal and hungry people what else are you going to do If you are a skilled buss driver you can do it even if you have to do it slowly

They probably are not going to go around and around the town like other because they are many, , and probably hungry probably why they stopped at the dinner in fact, Lost and maybe even need gas maybe want to find out if there is a hotel near by

No one ever said passing the town is a requirement

I would in fact doubt they would do anything but stop the first time

Boyd said in a interview that one of his own questions he wants to find out is why do the people turn into the monsters from the woods. He said it among othet things and nobody asked him to explain more about that. I posted the actual interview in one of your last from videos.

The voices instructed Sara to cut out Toby’s tongue, and the monsters seem to rip peoples tongues out before killing them. I wonder what that’s about.

Good stream though 👍🏼

You know it just hit me in episode 2 when they were first going into colony house at night on the porch and the creatures were there while they were trying to get someone to open the door

Julie was absolutely close enough to the creature you called to her why was she not attacked

@ABNORMAL SA MYTHIC Thank you, I definitely will. I have another question. I know that there is no cellphone coverage in Fromland, but why don't the people use the apps on their cellphones that don't require cellphone coverage (such as Skype, Messenger, Google Hangouts, etc.) to see if they can contact the outside world? Additionally, they still can use the cameras on their phones to document the strangeness, inconsistencies, and idiosyncrasies that they see around the town.

ABNORMAL SA MYTHIC

Listen if you have any theory just reply at my reply to you so it will notice, i am very fan of yours.
