Where Are You Going
Dave Mathews Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Where are you going, with your long face pulling down?
Don't hide away, like an ocean
But you can't see, but you can smell
And the sound of waves crash down

I am no superman
I have no answers for you
I am no hero, oh that's for sure
But I do know one thing
Is where you are, is where I belong
I do know, where you go, is where I want to be

Where are you going, where do you go?
Are you looking for answers, to questions under the stars?
If along the way you are growing weary, you can rest with me until a brighter day
It's okay, where are you going, where do you go?

I am no superman
I have no answers for you
I am no hero, oh that's for sure
But I do know one thing
Is where you are, is where I belong
I do know, where you go, is where I want to be

Where are you going, where do you go?
Are you looking for answers, where do you go?

Where are you going?

Where do you go?
Let's go.

Overall Meaning

In this song, Dave Matthews is addressing someone who seems lost and downtrodden. He is asking where they are going with their "long face pulling down" and urging them not to hide away like an ocean. Matthews then describes how even if this person can't physically see the ocean, they can still smell it and hear the sound of the waves crashing down.

Matthews then admits that he is no superhero and has no answers for this person's problems, but he knows one thing: where they are is where he belongs, and where they go is where he wants to be. He asks this person if they are looking for answers to questions under the stars and offers to let them rest with him until a brighter day. He then ends the song by asking, "Where are you going? Where do you go?"

Where are you going?
With your long face
Pulling down
Don't hide away
Like an ocean
That you can't see but you can smell
And the sound of waves crash down
I am no Superman
I have no reasons for you
I am no hero
Oh, that's for sure
But I do know one thing
Is where you are is where I belong
I do know where you go
That's where I want to be
Where are you going?
Where do you go?
Are you looking for answers
To questions under the stars?
Well, if along the way
You are grown weary
You can rest with me until
A brighter day and you're okay
I am no Superman
I have no answers for you
I am no hero
Oh, that's for sure
But I do know one thing
And that's where you are, is where I belong
I do know where you go
Is where I want to be
Where are you going?
Where do you go?
Where do you go?
Where are you going?
Where do you go?
I am no Superman
I have no answers for you
I am no hero
Oh, that's for sure
But I do know one thing
That's where you are, is where I belong
I do know where you go
Is where I want to be
Where are you going?
Where do you go?
Where are you going?
Where?
Well, let's go

Dave, you may never read this, but I wanted to thank you for so many years of great music and childhood memories of just sitting in my room and listening to your songs on my MP3 player when I had a stressful day. Listening to this song brought tears to my eyes, and it reminded me that there are still some good things in life that are worth living for, like listening to your music for instance. Your songs still spark this child-like wonder in me when I listen to them, and it's wonderful experience. Thank you so much for being there for me when times were tough on me.
