Blues
Dave Matthews Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I feel for the light
Your glory was lost that night
And no mind can't get me right
And now I'm praying that you'll find me out
Stone, stone has pulled me down
But my faith has got me bound to your grey blue eyes
Oh, oh
Oh, oh

Don't forget my broken heart
You remember it from the start
You made it and it's all a part
Of your grey blue eyes
Oh, oh
Oh, oh

You're gone and I know I'm dead
I've lost my way
Can't find me in your gray blue eyes
Grey blue eyes

Overall Meaning

In "Grey Blue Eyes," Dave Matthews and the rest of the band explore the theme of lost love and the search for redemption. The lyrics are emotionally charged, as the singer pleads with his lost love to remember his broken heart and to search for him in her "grey blue eyes." The opening lines hint at a sense of hopelessness, as the singer feels he has lost his way and cannot be "right" without his love. This feeling of despair is contrasted with the hope expressed in the chorus, where the singer puts his faith in his partner's eyes to guide him out of the darkness.

The repeated use of the phrase "grey blue eyes" creates a sense of longing and longing for something that is both unattainable and essential to the singer's survival. The color gray is associated with ambiguity and uncertainty, while blue often signifies loyalty, depth, and confidence. Together, these two colors create a complex emotional landscape that speaks to the complexity of the singer's feelings for his lost love. Ultimately, "Grey Blue Eyes" is a song about the power of love and the search for hope in the face of despair.

So much love for John Popper both from the crowd and in the comments. Fucking beautiful. I feel like he doesn't get nearly enough recognition or respect these days.

I also love the look on Carter's face throughout the solo.

Absolutely. Right on. He is a fiercely talented harp player. One of the best in the world. Seeing him play with Blues Traveler was amazing, and would love to see them live again. Maybe they'd open for DMB? For me, my dream show. Peace man.

Pure magic :) Love it, John Popper sitting in with Dave and the guys, that solo - freaking sick!

Kick ass. Classic as we speak. Popper is as phenomenal as ever. The band played tighter than ever just because of his presence. He is unbelievable. Best version I've heard or seen live since the song was recorded with him, and they just improved it. Hammered it! I never use the word, but I agree... EPIC.
