My grace is gone
Dave Matthews Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Neon shines through smokey eyes tonight
It's two A.M., I'm drunk again
And it's heavy on my mind

I could never love again
So much as I love you
Where you end, where I begin
Is like a river running through

Take my heart, take my eyes
I need them no more
If never again they fall
Upon the one I so adore

Excuse me please, one more drink
Could you make it strong?
Cause I don't need to think
She broke my heart
My Grace is gone
Another drink and I'll be gone

One drink to remember
Then another to forget
I think of every day to find
A love like you again

One drink to remember
And another to forget

Excuse me please, one more drink
Could you make it strong?
Cause I don't need to think
She broke my heart
My Grace is gone
Another drink and I'll be gone
One more drink and I'll move on

You think of things impossible
Then the sun refuse to shine
I woke with you beside me
Your cold hand lay in mine

Excuse me please, one more drink
Could you make it strong?
Cause I don't need to think
She broke my heart
My Grace is gone
Another drink and I'll go

Excuse me please, one more drink
Could you make it strong?
Cause I don't need to think
She broke my heart
My Grace is gone
Another drink and I'll move on

One more drink and I'll move on
One more drink, my Grace is gone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Dave Matthews Band's song Grace Is Gone seem to revolve around a man who is drinking to forget the pain of losing someone they love deeply. The opening line suggests a sense of despair as neon lights shine through smokey eyes, revealing that it's 2 am in the morning, and the man is once again drunk, and his worries weigh heavy on his mind.

The chorus, "take my heart, take my eyes, I need them no more," is an expression of grief, as the singer accepts the loss of their love and their need to see or love again. The line "if never again they fall upon the one I so adore" suggests an element of self-denial and perhaps a reluctance to find love again.

The lyrics "One drink to remember, then another to forget" signify that the man is trying to forget the memories he cherished while also finding a way to release himself from the hurt that has consumed his heart. The repetition of the phrase "Excuse me please, one more drink, could you make it strong? Cause I don't need to think" suggests a desire to numb the pain of losing the love of his life. The ending reveals that the man finally comes to terms with his loss, as he declares that one more drink, and his Grace will be gone.

Overall, Grace Is Gone is a powerful and poignant song that takes the audience on an emotional journey through grief and its impact on one's life.

This song truly helped me when I lost my wife a few years back. This is the first time I've listened to it since my terminal brain cancer diagnosis last year. Just had my second surgery and recovering at home. Found this song again and it still soothes my soul. I'll be seeing my baby again soon. I hate it for my mother. I'll be the 2nd son she'll see buried and now my father has stage 4 lung cancer. Never smoked. ..when it rains , right ? Let your loved ones know how you feel, folks. Pray for my mother. ..

Was blessed to be invited to the recording of this AOL session. About 30 of us called by The Warehouse, 3pm on a weekday, Robert Lang Studios, sat on the floor silently until we were told we could applaud. Such a surreal experience, will never forget it!
