Save Me
Dave Matthews Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm driving through the desert I, met a man
Who told me of his crazy plan
He'd been walking there for twenty days
He was going to walk on
For twenty more
Said "How about a drink or a bite to eat?"
He said "No, my faith is all I need"
So then, save me
Save me mister walking man
If you can

You don't need to prove a thing to me
Just give me faith, make me believe
Come on, save me
Save me Mister walking man
If you can
Come on, save me
Save me Mister stranger
If you please save me
Save me
Stranger, if you please
Or am I too far gone
I see to get back home
To get back home

How about you take a ride with me
We could kill some time, shoot the breeze
He said "every whispering wind and second counts"
Oh, maybe if you walk, but you should drive around

Save me
Save me
Mr. walking man, if you can
Come on, save me
Save me Mr. stranger, if you please
Save me, save me
Stranger, if you please
Or am I too far gone
To get back home
To get back home
I don't need you to stall for some time, no
I don't need you to turn water into wine, no
I don't need you to, to fly
I'm just asking you to save me

(Might try saving yourself)
I'm going to save me
(Might try saving yourself)
I swear those lips shine
(Might try saving yourself)
As it, the moon, the moon it shines
(Might try saving yourself)
Why don't you, save me
(Might try saving yourself)

Come on and save me
(Might try saving yourself)

Overall Meaning

The song "Save Me" by Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds tells the story of encountering a stranger in the desert who has been walking alone for twenty days without food or drink. This man refused any help or assistance and claimed that his faith was enough to keep him going. The singer then urges the stranger to save him, not necessarily physically but through providing hope and faith. The repeated chorus emphasizes this plea for help, with the singer asking for salvation from both the mister walking man and the stranger.

The song reflects on the difficulties of life and the desire for comfort and guidance. The singer seems to be lost both physically and emotionally, and seeks help from someone who appears to have a greater sense of purpose and faith. The stranger represents a possible source of hope and guidance, and the singer is desperately seeking salvation from him.

Overall, "Save Me" is a song about hope and the search for something bigger than oneself. It also acknowledges the challenges of life and the need for assistance, whether it comes in the form of faith or another person.
