The Song That Jane Likes
Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds Lyrics

I'll come back again
Torching time talking rhymes in
I'll come back again
Would you like to play
With the thought of a friend
In a distant passing stage
With your hands up and out
So resigned you will fall down
While you around here play
Wild on the warm and far away
While you around here play
The days keep scribbling themselves
in tidy lines
Would you like to play
With a fool holding hands
With a one-eyed jack of spades
While on the deck they sing
All of the captain's cards are kings
Still he and the queen are lost at sea
I hope it isn't you and me
And I'll be back 'round again
Yes I'll walk in time with you old friend
And we'll find that place that we danced in so long ago
And in plays to write the wire in
I'll come back again
Torching time talking rhymes in
I'll come back again
With this resigned
the letter I sign
The Song That Jane Likes by the Dave Matthews Band is a song that blends poetry, fantasy, and simple storytelling. The song's lyrics dwell on the themes of friendship, resignation, and hope. The first two stanzas find Dave Matthews talking about the kind of play he has with a friend, who might be far away. The song suggests that such friends might not communicate frequently, but when they do, they would play with thoughts, talk about rhymes, and write wires. The mood feels melancholic and wistful, almost like playing pretend games of youth that one can no longer experience.
The chorus brings some ambiguity to the song as it describes someone lying down with their hands up and out, resigned to fall down. The lyrics suggest an inner struggle within the person, which the singer might be trying to console. The singer assures them that they will be back and will find the place they danced in so long ago. The final verse features a metaphor of playing with a one-eyed jack of spades and a fool holding hands, showcasing how the singer is willing to be foolish and challenge fate.
Overall, the song is optimistic, though with a sad undertone. While it acknowledges the difficulties of life, it provides a hopeful message of finding one's way back and reconnecting with a friend.

Just imagine if Leroi and Boyd were still evolving these jams. It’ll never be like the early days, but I’ve loved every step and love what they are now.
True musicians, every one!
