My head in the clouds
I hit this corner
With my foot on the gas
I started sliding, I lose it
Everything's different just like that
What will soon become of me?
Frozen heart
Screaming wheels
Does that screaming come from me?
So damn lucky, when went on ahead
You say, you say
I see you later
I heard what you said a few minutes later
I'm sliding
Everything's different, again
Oh my God, wait and see
What will soon become of me?
Frozen heart
Screaming wheels
Does that screaming come from me?
I'm dizzy from all this spinning
Now I'm thinking that you did all you could
When you said my love
Take it slowly
OK, is what I said
Oh my God, wait and see
What will soon become of me?
Frozen heart
Screaming wheels
But does that screaming come from me?
Take me back, just before I was spinning
Take me back, just before I got dizzy
Take me back, amazing what a minute can do
Just like you
So, so, so, so, up, around, around, around
Amazing what a minute can do
Around, around, around
OK
The lyrics of Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds's song "You Are My Sanity" paint the picture of an emotional, high-speed car ride. The singer is driving with his foot on the gas, careening around corners and feeling everything change in an instant. The lines "Everything's different just like that" convey the suddenness and disorientation of the experience. The singer's heart is frozen, and he hears screaming wheels, perhaps a reference to his own fear and anxiety.
As the ride progresses, the singer becomes increasingly overwhelmed. He is dizzy from all the spinning and wonders if the screaming he hears comes from himself. Eventually, he is able to slow down and regain his composure with the help of someone else, likely the "you" referred to in the title of the song. This person tells him to take it slowly, and the singer agrees. The song ends with a repetition of the phrase "OK," suggesting a newfound sense of calm and acceptance.
Overall, the lyrics of "You Are My Sanity" explore the theme of personal upheaval and the need for support to weather difficult times. The imagery of the high-speed car ride conveys the sense of disorientation and danger that can come with major life changes. However, the presence of another person, likely a romantic partner, offers comfort and stability. Through this person's reassurances, the singer is able to regain control and find a sense of peace.

I was smitten with a woman back in 2006, and we used to listen to this song together all the time during that summer. Oh, to be young again.

I used to hear Tim play every Monday night at Millers in Charlottesville, back in the mid-90s. This was always my favorite song. What a prolific, soulful artist and truly one of the best guitarists ever.
